The North Sydney Bears are one of the oldest rugby league clubs in Australia. The Bears were a foundation club of the inaugural New South Wales Rugby League Premiership. The Bears won two Premierships in Australia's top competition in 1921 and 1922. In 1943, the Bears were beaten in the Grandfinal by the Newtown Jets.
The Bears competed in the NRL from 1908-1999. In 1999 the Bears proposed to move to the NSW Central Coast. However, financial restraints and delays in getting the Central Coast stadium ready, meant the Bears would not make it to Gosford. By the seasons end, the Bears were forced into a merger with neighbours and arch-rivals the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and the joint venture would be known as the Northern Eagles. Many Bears fans refused to support the joint venture and the Eagles were doomed from day one. Fans on the Central Coast turned there backs on the Eagles aswell and in 2002 the club wound up.
The Bears are now competing in the countries second toughest competition - the NSWRL Premier League. The Bears have found the last couple of seasons difficult, but with Bears legend Greg Florimo leading the way, better times are just around the corner. |
