Quite a mouthful, isn't it, Pfauenauge and Kaleidoskop? So what does it mean? Well, a quick glance at the vibrant iridescence on the color illustrations below will give you an idea. Pfauenauge and Kaleidoskop refers to the astonishing iridescence that you see here - a shimmering, peacock-like, varied and ever-changing effect. So let's turn the clock back five or so years to get to the heart of the matter. Back in the 1990s several vases turned up with an astonishingly vibrant iridescence - one of them (owned by Tom Little) had a paper label on that read "LGW Pfauenauge Kaleidoskop". Dave Doty took some photos and sent them to us, and so we started to try and find out what the significance was. Read on .................

STOP PRESS Delving through our photo files we found one of a vase that we took years ago. It's an LGW vase of course, though we didn't realise it at the time. Here it is left. Now read on!

The result of our research was published in our NetworK journal in 2000 (see the illustration above. You can also see the vase above in color on Dave Doty's website). A fellow researcher, Sigmar Gieselberger, uncovered the fascinating background to the production of this unusual iridized glass by Lleinauer Glaswaren in Bavaria (LGW). The date of production seems to have been fairly recent - into the 1980s - and was carried out by vacuum iridising. You can read the original NetworK article above.

Another characteristic of the LGW iridized glass (as well as its vibrant iridescence) is its usually clear base glass coupled with a smoky effect on the inside of the item

Other vases have been seen in LGW iridized ware - see left and in STOP PRESS at the top of the page . Below right, a  label Pfauenage Bleikristal (crystal glass) also seen on a vividly iridized vase.
