| Who is causing the problem? Mr and Mrs. X down the street that is allowing their dog to breed each year because "she is so nice". In seven years, one breeding can lead to 370,092 dogs. YOU are responsible for EVERY dog that is created as a result of your breeding. Do you know where your puppies are? Or your puppies puppies? Or your puppies puppies puppies? |

| I have spent alot of time researching the plight of the homeless dog, and I have found a web site that covers everything I want new and prospective puppy owners to know. Please follow the link below to the "No Puppy Mills Canada" web site for an extensive gathering of information about the acquiring of dogs. Of particular interest are the articles on Backyard Breeders, Free to Good Home and Where to Find a Pet. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| For those of you that want a quick reference to the information above, here it is.... It is estimated that Canada has approximately 2900 puppy mills in operation, producing about 1,450,000 dogs per year. On average, tens of thousands of pets will live in research centers, and hundreds of thousands will end up in shelters. Only the lucky ones get adopted. Euthanasia rates (due to homelessness) for Canada are estimated at about 550,000 pets per year. US studies (no, we are not that different in Canada) show the following numbers in relation to animal relinquishment at shelters: Puppy Mills 20 % Feral (wild) dogs 1 % Breeders 12 % Casual breedings 67 % |
