Mr and Mrs. X down the street that is allowing their dog to breed each year because "she is so nice". In seven years, one breeding can lead to 370,092 dogs.
YOU are responsible for EVERY dog that is created as a result of your breeding. Do you know where your puppies are? Or your puppies puppies? Or your puppies puppies puppies?
It is estimated that Canada has approximately 2900 puppy mills in operation, producing about 1,450,000 dogs per year.
On average, tens of thousands of pets will live in research centers, and hundreds of thousands will end up in shelters. Only the lucky ones get adopted.
Euthanasia rates (due to homelessness) for Canada are estimated at about 550,000 pets per year.
US studies (no, we are not that different in Canada) show the following numbers in relation to animal relinquishment at shelters:
Puppy Mills 20 %
Feral (wild) dogs 1 %
Breeders 12 %
Casual breedings 67 %
It has recently come to my attention the horror of dog overpopulation in Puerto Rico. Although this problem is miles away, it stands as an example of what can happen if we continue on the road we are.
