The Latin Averroists
Followers of the Muslim philosopher Averroës. They followed Aristotle in teaching that matter is eternal and in denying immortality of the soul. They advocated a doctrine of double truth- a truth in philosophy need not be valid in religion.

The most influential and cosmopolitan of the Northern humanists. He wrote Praise of Folly and the Greek version of the New Testament.
French humanist; His work included Gargantua and Pantagrew.
The most significant figure in English humanism. Utopia was his first important description of an ideal state since Plato's Republic. He was the first of the modern English socialists, and he was executed for treason.
