     Lord Mayor of Bristol 1662;

     The eldest son of  Sir William, Sir Robert Cann was  Lord
     Mayor of Bristol in 1662 and in 1675,  and its representative in
     parliament in 1678.  He received the honor  of knighthood from
     Charles, II, and was  raised to barony  in 1662,  and became
     Cann  of Crompton Green.
     Sir   Robert  had   quite  a   difficult   time  during   his
     administration as mayor.  According to English records as
     reported by Roger North  in his "Life of Francis North,  Baron of
     Guilford" "the  Infamous  Jeffries,  Chief Justice  of  England
     moved  into Bristol  with  the  expressed  purpose   of
     "cleaning  out  the  corporation" (the mayor  and board of
     alderman)  and humbling that proud  body.  After  lashing and
     reviling the  city magnates,  he turned to their chief, sitting
     in  his scarlet and furs of office, stormed upon  him his
     choicest reproaches, and  given all  the ill epithets he could, he
     ordered Sir Robert  to quit the bench and go down to the
     criminal's post at the bar, and there plead.  When the mayor
     hesitated Jeffries bawled at him, and called for the guards.  All
     were amazed but it did give Sir Robert the security of a trial at
     London.  There  he was acquitted.  Jeffries said,  "Go thy way,
     sin  no  more  lest  a  worst thing  come  unto  thee."   He
     also characterized  Sir Robert  as a  "stinking, whining,
     presbyterian that could be smelled forty miles  off." However he
     still kept his  head  on  his  shoulders.

     Robert Canns second son John migrated to Delaware in 1675.  Sir
     Robert sent financial Aid to son John in Delaware.

     Robert Cann & Co, was name of merchant of Bristol.  Merchants
     were also interested in "privateering", which was a ship of
     private ownership commissioned by the Admiralty to prey on enemy
     shipping. There is evidence of the Canns being involved in this.
     Certainly this added to the fortunes of the Cann family.

     Sir Robert was severely criticized for going to jail to visit the
     Quakers and sectaries.

     Bristol is the largest city in southwestern England.  It has a
     population of 396,600 (1984 est.).  An international seaport, it
     is situated on the Avon River about 11 km (7 mi) from its mouth
     in the Bristol Channel.  Supplemented by the docks of Avonmouth
     and Portishead, Bristol is a busy import point for food and
     petroleum and an export outlet for the city's many manufactures,
     notably heavy machinery and motor vehicles. Bristol is also noted
     for its aircraft production.

     During the Middle Ages the city was a textile center.  Its
     seaport was John CABOT's point of departure for the New World in
     1497.  William PENN and John WESLEY both lived in Bristol. The
     city thrived on commerce with the colonies and was a crucial link
     in the slave trade.  The end of that trade and the rising
     competition of Liverpool brought a decline in the early 1800s,
     but the expansion of the city's docks and the development of new
     industries allowed Bristol to regain its position as a major
     seaport by the early 20th century. Repeated bombing during World
     War II caused heavy damage, but many notable medieval edifices
     remain.

           There are 4 recorded children of Sir Robert Cann:
             i.  THOMAS CANN born in Bristol Eng, abt 1640;
        7   ii.  JOHN CANN
        8  iii.  WILLIAM CANN, SIR
            iv.  ANNE CANN born in BRISTOL, SOMERSET, ENG, abt 1650;
                 married (1) Dudley North on 1674; married (2) Robert Gunning;

5  RICHARD CANN born in Bristol, England, abt 1630; married Eleanor Grove;
           Richard Cann had 6 children:

     Cann; date of death: 1656; PLACE OF BURIAL: Holy Trinty Church Hull;

7  JOHN CANN born in Bristol, England, 1640; married Mary Unknown;
     died Philadelphia, Penn 2 MAY 1694; OCCUPATION:
     merchant ,judge, surveyor, planter; MISC: Emigrated to Delaware 1675; CHURCH
     AFFILIATION: Episcopal, Presbyterian & Quaker ?;

     John Cann son of  Sir Robert and Deliverance Cann was on list of
     the ship "Griffin" which sailed from London July 20, 1675 arrived
     November in Newcastle Del. The ship was chartered by Major John
     Fenwick, the leader of a group of Quakers who founded Salem N.J.(
     Eastern Shore of Delaware). It was the first English settlement
     on the Eastern Shore of Del. John Cann and others disembarked at
     Newcastle. -authority of book by Sewart, "Major John Fenwick"
     John Cann is reported to have been born in Bristol, England sometime
     between  1635 and  1645, the  son of  Robert Cann,  Lord Mayor
     of Bristol.  He appears on the Delaware before 1677.  The
     indications are that  he was a typical  English younger son, a
     good education but no money except  what the eldest son chose to
     give him, and I believe in this case, nothing.  He sat on many
     juries and in 1679, was  appointed, constable  for one  year.

     When William Penn granted him a large tract  of land in 1681, a
     movement  was started to merge the Delaware Counties with Pennsylvania.

     The  result was a petition was  drawn up signed, and  sent to
     Penn. As  John Cann's signature  appears on  the  document as  a
     representative of  New Castle  County, it  is safe  to assume
     that he was  one  of  the leaders.  He bought his first  tract of
      land in 1680,  and added more from time  to time until in  1685
     he paid taxes  on 900 acres and two lots in New Castle.  When
     William Penn assumed direct management of his province, he
     appointed  John Cann  a justice of  the peace,  and in  1686, a
     provincial judge.

     In 1684, he became  the first registrar of will for New Castle
     County, and the same  year, a deputy surveyor  - I have  not
     been  able  to  locate any  of  his  surveys,  but  his
     appointment appears in the archives of Pennsylvania.  The first
     elected assemble was called  in 1683, and John Cann was  chosen
     as  a  representative  of  New  Castle  County.

     The following year he became a member  of the Provincial Council.
     The growing dissatisfaction with  the appointment of officers
     for the three lower counties  came to a head  in 1690, and the
     members of these  counties refused  to  meet  with those  from
     Pennsylvania.  After  some  months the  rebellious  members  met
     in New  Castle, organized a separate council and proceeded  to
     select John Cann as the  president of  council, and  to make
     their own  appointments.  This was the first attempt of  the
     Delaware Counties to break away from Pennsylvania, and,  although
     this controversy was  settled by compromise, the method  of
     boycotting the council was  found to be effective,  and  was
     used successfully  when  the colonies  were separated  in 1705.
     The  compromise was  that no  one would  be appointed without
     their approval. This principle was later adopted as  a national
     policy,  and is  in effect  today   -  the  senate "advise and
     consent" on executive appointments.

     In 1689, Jean Forat, a justice of the peace, was removed from
     office by  the Governor as a  seditious person.  He  filed
     charges against John Cann,  who sat as president of  the court,
     indirectly charging him with being disloyal to King William.
     Later, in 1691, a John  white filed a  list of  serious charges
     against  John Cann alleging  all manner  of  things, such  as;
     that  he was  selling justice; that he was selling drink  without
     a license; that he was transporting tobacco  out of  the colony
     without paying  customs; that he was disrespectful and
     contemptuous  of the king's laws and his messengers,  and
     generally not  a proper person  to administer the king's law.
     However, the  Governor reaffirmed  his faith  in John  Cann's
     loyalty  and ability  when he  reappointed him  to the
     provincial council after the charges had been  filed and he had
     been involved in a minor rebellion as a leader.    John Cann left
     two sons, John  and William, this is proven by  their statements
     in several deeds.  As James Claypoole was named administrator  of
     the estate, both of the  boys must  have been  minors at  the
     time  of their  father's death, and as  it is estimated that
     their mother  died about 1685, they must have reached their
     majority between 1700 and 1705. --from Ida May Cann Goode
     John was a Presbyterian but was friendly with Quakers. Appears to
     be r a personal friend of William Penn. Received grant from Penn
     in 1681 John was appointed Justice of Peace in Town of New Castle 1682.

     At the time of Johns arrival in Delaware the Plague was in
     Britain It could be that Johns arrival and stay in Delaware was
     because of  the Plague in England.  He may have came with William
     Penn on the  "Welcome" or "John & Sarah". Many died en route from
     sickness.  DO to conflicts btw Lord Baltimore, William Penn, and
     the Dutch some may have moved South into the Eastern shore of
     Maryland.  Traces of the Canns disappears maybe because of only
     female descendants. John Cann and descendants were the 2nd largest
     land owners in Delaware.

     1684 John Cann lived on 400 Acres at White Clay Creek near Mill
     Run, Also referred to as Brewers Run, Talnells Mill now Stanton.
     There was a part set aside for a church and burial ground.    The
     church apparently never built, but prayer meetings were held
     there. It is believed that John is buried there but no trace of
     the spot or  its location is known.

     1682 John Cann lived at the "Colby House" in New Castle, 110
     Delaware Av which can be seen today.

     Youngest Son of John Cann of White Clay Creek, lived at Mill
     Creek  and located near Newcastle and the Bread and Cheese
     Islands. He owned lands with over 300 houses. The Manor House at
     Mill Run was sold to Richard Empson. William Ball also purchased
     land from him.

           There are 8 recorded children of William Cann:
               i.  ELIZABETH CANN date of birth: abt 1710;
              ii.  MARY CANN date of birth: abt 1710;
              iii.  HELLINA CANN date of birth: abt 1710;

       12  JAMES CANN born in 1710; married Rebecca
     Lamb on 4 DEC 1736 at Shrewsbury Episc Church; died Kent County Md
     1766; MISC: Brother John Cann Jr; CHURCH AFFILIATION: Episcopal;

     The Maryland  records show a Jane  Cann as arriving  in 1665, and
     a Cate  Cann in 1678.  According  to the land records  of Kent
     Co., a John Cann bought fifty acres of a tract known as
     "Richard's Adventure" in 1724.  John Cann, Jr.  appears also as a
     land owner.  His brother, James, married a Rebecca Lamb in
     Shrewsbury Church in 1736; the birth of  a son, Francis, in 1737,
     and  a daughter, Mary Ann,  the  following year.   A  Francis
     Cann,  believed to  be  a descendant of this Francis, died  in
     Wilmington, Delaware in 1871.  A Kent County deed, dated, 1751,
     mentions the age of James Cann as forty seven, which means that
     he was born in 1704.  This rules out any close connection or
     relationship to John Cann of Delaware.
     The marriage register of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, near
     Earleville, Cecil County,  Maryland, lists the marriage  of a
     John Cann and a  Rachel Darnett, daughter of Charles  Darnett, in
     1740, and the birth of a daughter, Sarah, a year later.  I have
     not been able to  accurately identify this  John Cann.   It is to
     be noted that St. Stephen's  parish included all the land
     between the Elk, and Sassafras  Rivers, and  that this John  Cann
     could  have lived anywhere in this large area.  It  is thought,
     but not proven, that this the John Cann spoken of above  as
     living in Kent County.  The indications are  that he sold his
     land to his brother,  James, in 1738.   No added  information was
     found  in the  records of  Kent County of a John  Cann.  The
     files in the offices  of the Recorder of Deeds, and the Registrar
     of Wills in Philadelphia does not list any  Canns,   except  the
     appointment   of  James   Claypoole  as administrator of the
     estate of John Cann in 1694. -from William Ferris Cann Book.

Rebecca Lamb's parents Francis Lamb and Rosamond Beck were members of the
Episcopal church. They were married at St Pauls,  April 3 1714.  One history has
Rebecca being put out of the quaker meeting for marrying out of the meeting.
However, maybe it was James Cann that was the quaker since Rebecca was not..

                    THE CANNS IN KENTUCKY AND THE WEST.

               The western and southwestern branch of the Cann
          family is descended from William (C), the son of John (B)
          of Brewers Run, the son of John of Bristol.  William who
          was born in 1758, enlisted in the celebrated "Bucktail
          Brigade," at Philadelphia about 1777-8, as did also his
          brother John.  They doubtless participated in most of the
          engagements of this command until the close of the
          Revolution, though they seem to have become separated
          when they were mustered out, as William availed himself
          of the grant of the western lands and went to Kentucky,
          while John returned to Delaware, and located near his
          younger brother, Robert (C).  William, who was born in
          1758, married Mrs. Harry Cash, who had one or two
          children, some of whose descendants still reside in the
          state.  The date of William's marriage is not known, but
          he died in 1835.

     MELANCHOLY.
     Yesterday the sloop Betsy, of Still Pond,
     was found below the rocks in the river on her
     beam ends, with four persons, three whites
     and a mulatto, on her side, who had perished
     with cold. She sailed from this for Still
     Pond the evening before, and supposed
     that she upset in a squall.  The dead bodies
     were brought up to town by Queen's
     town packet, bound in, and a coroner's
     inquest was held over them.  To day as we
     are informed, the coroner sends them to their
     relatives on the eastern shore for interment.
     There were three more, two whites and a
     mulatto on board, whose bodies have not
     been found.  The names of the persons
     found are John Taylor, master, Jas. Cann,
     Aquilla Meeks, and a mulatto man, name
     not recollected: Robert Worrel, of this
     city, sailed in this vessel for the eastern
     shore, and is supposed to be among the people
     lost, whose bodies have not been recovered.
