When she was a small girl, Yeardley Smith never dreamed she would grow up to be ...a girl! Yeardley, or at least her voice, appears weekly on The Simpsons. Yeardley plays the smart and savvy eight-year-old Lisa Simpson. "Lisa speaks to my heart," says Yeardley. "I think she's a great kid!" As a girl, Yeardley (pronounced YARD-lee) was teased about her unusual name and unique voice. Bullies at school in her hometown of Washington, D.C. called her "Yardstick" and urged her to talk so they could poke fun at her voice. To gain confidence, shy and unsure Yeardley got involved with drama in school. "It was my dream to be an actress, and now I am living my dream," she says. Today, Yeardley' talents are in big demand, and she has appeared in movies and plays on Broadway. But her favorite job remains performing on The Simpsons. It's easy to make Lisa laugh when taping the episodes, says Yeardley, because the scripts are so funny that she laughs too! Now when Yeardley looks back on the teasing she suffered as a girl, she can smile. She remembers a time when she was struggling to fit in, and her mom gave her some valuable advice.
