Moses Baldwin Post, GAR, reunion at the Long Island Fair
The Sons of Union Veterans
of the Civil War, Department of New York have authorized a new SUV
camp. This camp, the Moses A. Baldwin camp is located on Long Island
for members in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn. The camp will meet
the fourth Thursday of each month
(except Jul. & Aug.) at 7:15 PM. We will be meeting in the American
Legion post Building in Hempstead,N.Y.. This is the same building that
the Moses A. Baldwin Post 544, GAR met in until their demise.
Moses A. Baldwin enlisted in Co.H, 119th N.Y.V. in August 1862. He was
mustered in as a private, promoted to sergeant and commissioned as 2nd
Lt. on June 29, 1863. He was transferred to Company K and promoted to
1st Lt. on August 28, 1863. He was wounded in action May 8, 1964 at
Rockey Face Ridge, Ga. and transferred to Company A on March 1, 1865 to
be discharged March 25, 1865. Baldwin would die of injuries received
during his discharge of duties as Supervisor of the night watchmen at
Washington Market in NYC on January 11, 1877. The GAR post would be
charted on March 11, 1885 as a fitting memorial to this well loved
member of the 119th N.Y.V..
