Workshop on building ELIZA - the world's first AI program (built in the 60s) [Session 3]

(Focus on : Working with Listeners, and creating custom components in Java)
This session will focus on creating our own TextField, which can recieve enter key strokes and notify listeners about it. The listeners can then use the input text to do processing.

This session will aim to teach participants about the theory of Listeners in Java and how to use it to create custom components.

Assumptions of Experience Level with Java : Participants should know how to make Java applets, and be familiar in general with design in Java.

The session will be conducted by Somik Raha.
Date : Sunday, August 5, 2001.
Time : 11 am, IST (2:30 pm Tokyo Time, 3:30 pm Sydney Time)

Note : We will send you a confirmation of registration, with your user name and password.
Minimum Requirements : Your browser should be preferably IE 5.0 or higher, or Netscape 4.63 or higher.

Somik has a passion for AI and Java. He has been programming for 10 years, and is trying hard to reduce the mistakes made in the last decade. He currently works for Kizna Corporation, Japan, and is into mobile computing and collaboration. When he is not in the grind, he likes making crazy programs which are generally of not much use to anyone, but are good time pass for the bored programmer.

The workshop will be held using Kizna Corporation's cutting edge Collaboration technology, which they have kindly permitted our JUG to use. This collaboration software runs through a standard browser, and works through firewalls. It does not require installation. So it should be easy for people to join in. Also, one of the nice features of this is that this is a chat with memory. So if people get disconnected, they wont loose the messages, and will be able to see the whole conversation when they get back in. This technology is still in beta, and we are thankful to Kizna to let us deploy it on Caljug, to help improve our community interaction.

Workshop on building ELIZA - the world's first AI program (built in the 60s) [Session 2]

(Focus on : Creating a simple Applet, and adding components to it, BorderLayout)
The continuation session to build Eliza will proceed from where we left off in the first session. It will involve in trying to make a basic applet based conversation system. For the design, please read the chat transcript of the first session.
