Late mistakes by Terry's pitcrew drops him to 21st place finish at California
Summary: Terry started out Sunday's race quietly picking off the competion, as his Kellogg's Chevrolet started out fairly good, but gradually kept getting loose as track temperatures rose. Crew Chief Jim Long and the crew kept adjusting the track bar and making tire pressure changes, but their 17+ second pitstops didn't compare to the competition's 15 and 16 second pitstops and Terry ended up going a lap down to the leaders. Terry fought hard and battled a loose race car for what looked like about a 15th or better finish, but after a late race caution, their final pitstop spelled disaster. After much discussion over the radio (Terry wanted 4 tires and fuel), Jim Long convinced Terry to take on only 2 tires and fuel. When they came in for the stop, the crew botched the stop, with Terry almost running over an airhose. They ended up taking 17 seconds for two tires and fuel. After losing key track position, they decided to come back in and change left side tires. With 15 laps to go Terry started out in 26th place and finished hard to take the checkered flag in 21st place. Terry was very disappointed with his car's race setup in the corners, saying at one point, "I brought a knife to a gun fight." He also made the comment, "Damn, I guess I'll just pass everyone on the straightaways." After the race, Jim Long told his crew, "Keep your heads up, this is the worst mistakes we've made in a long time." In final summary, a 34th place qualifying effort doomed Terry to getting lapped during the race and taking away any chance of a top 10 finish. Poor qualifying, poor pit work equals one spot lost in the points race, dropping the Kellogg's team to 15th.
Good luck at Richmond Terry.
Note: I took almost 1200 pictures on my flash memory camera this weekend and excellent ones of Terry and everything else from the NAPA 500 race weekend. I wil try to upload my favorites in the next few days.....enjoy!
