Woodturnings
by Bud
Food
for thought
- Woodturnings
are made from raw logs with all their cracks, checks, knots, dark streaks,
spalted areas and other 'faults'. In my work I have to take into account the
living wood, it's special character, it's weaknesses and strength, as well
as the design I might want to impose on it. At a certain point, the wood
itself may warrant a change in the over all design. Improvisation, creativity,
technique, artistic temperament, the medium, as well as the tools themselves
may all play a part in the synergistic evolution of the piece.
-
- All
subject matter is common. Therefore, it is the interpretation of the
individual artist's or crafter's creative mind and hands that can take a
particular subject matter and transform it from common into either a
different, unique, or extraordinary work of art.
- So
for the 'Wood turner' it is his responsibility to take a block of wood and
transform it into a piece of art.
- It
is even better for the turner if he has some knowledge of the tree that has
provided him with this remarkable piece of wood as a medium for his talents.
- Most
of the wood I turn, I have harvested myself. Mainly from storm damaged
trees, from developers building lots, and from helpful and friendly
neighbors. My chainsaw has many miles on it.
- Any
wood I buy is from a local mill that will cut to the size I want. Usually a
minimum of 4" thick by 12" wide. I find this is the best dimension
for my turnings.
