Pontiac High Archaeological Corps |
Welcome!
This website is the legacy of a successful project carried out in 2003 to document the heritage of Bristol. Please explore! This website will be maintained to document the on-going activities of the Pontiac High Archaeological Corps.
The Pontiac High Archaeological Corps programme for 2004 was a success. We carried out in the village of Portage-du-Fort resistivity, conductivity, and magnetometer surveys of the historic village centre, with the support of Jacques Whitford Environment Limited. Results successfully located a large warehouse-type building near the former St-Jacques School. The school building itself once housed the Pontiac's first hospital, and was built by Dr. Purvis. We intend to do more work during the summer of 2005.
The Municipality of Bristol's proposed new Master Plan was unveiled on March 20th 2004. Residents had until March 31st to make their views known. Click on News for more information.
Bristol Village
Heritage carried out a Survey of sites and places of cultural, archaeological
and historical importance in the Municipality of Bristol, Quebec between May and
August 2003. The Survey results will be presented in April, in the form of a
digital database and GIS mapping (presented for public use on
CD-ROM), and will
be published as the Bristol Sites and Monuments Record, or BSMR. An accompanying
document (which will also be available on the CD ROM) is NOW AVAILABLE! It provides a framework for managing and making use of the heritage resources identified in Bristol. This ‘Strategy’ document has the following key functions:
-
to describe the background to the Survey and the
methodology used to create the BSMR
-
to provide a broad analysis of the findings of the Survey
in the form of a tabular presentation of resource strengths and
opportunities for use in Education and in the development of
Recreational facilities
-
to put forward proposals for the management of the
‘Cultural Heritage Resource’ of the Municipality represented by the
findings of the Survey. A short Appendix to the document provides advice
to Bristol Municipality in the particular area of Municipal Planning in
respect of Cultural Heritage.
