How he was acquired: Gonzalez was drafted by the Padres from the Pirates in the Rule V minor league draft Dec. 9, 1996.

2001 season: Gonzalez had a surprisingly productive year for the Padres as Ben Davis’ backup at catcher. The stocky receiver set career highs in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage despite getting 124 fewer at-bats than he did in 2000. He even stole two bases.
