WHO Code
- In 1981 the World Health Assembly adopted the International Code of Marketing
of Breast-milk Substitutes in the form of a recommendation, in the World Health
Organization (WHO) Constitution. More than 160 countries and territories, including the
United States, agreed to take steps to implement the Code. The aim of the Code is to
"contribute to the provision of safe and adequate nutrition for infants, by the
protection and promotion of breast-feeding, and by ensuring the proper use of breast-milk
substitutes, when these are necessary, on the basis of adequate information and through
appropriate marketing and distribution."

Walk for Breastfeeding Info -Your World Walk for
Breastfeeding and World Breastfeeding Week Headquarters. Learn all about past and future
World Walks. There are lots of great ideas and useful information, too.
Some Facts: It has been estimated that 1.5 million babies
die yearly from unsafe bottlefeeding. For every 1000 babies born in
the U.S., 4 will die from formula feeding, The US Government buys $600 million worth of
formula each year, every 30 seconds a baby somewhere dies from unsafe
bottle feeding. Without breastfeeding, babies don't get the benefit of passive immunity
normally passed on in the mothers' milk. The risk of contracting serious diseases from
bottle feeding is therefore high, but it is further compounded by the fact that, in the
Third World, many people don't have access to a clean water supply with which to make up
the formula, and poverty can lead to mothers over-diluting the formula to make it go
further. Waterborne diseases fed straight to vulnerable babies causes what is now a common
condition in many parts of the world, & formula companies know these facts and yet
often still use unethical marketing policies to promote their products.
Alternatives to Bottles for
Temporary Supplementation
Alternative Feeding
Methods for Breastfed Babies Traditionally, babies who cannot
breastfeed temporarily, are fed using a bottle nipple, but for many babies and their
mothers, this can result in problems that are difficult to correct. Alternative feeding
methods, including finger feeding, cup feeding and complimentary feeding at the breast,
are a temporary solution. Return the baby to the breast as soon as possible.

Finding Help
If baby is sick, we take her to a doctor. Strangely, if
breastfeeding isn't right, we aren't as inclined to get help. Go to
a breastfeeding counselor or lactation consultant. Most
breastfeeding problems are fixable with perseverance and good help.
So
don't quit, go to a specialist and get support. Much cheaper and
healthier than formula! These links will assist you in finding good
help:

Surgery & the Breastfeeding
Mother-It is not necessary to wean for most surgeries. Most
medications are compatible with nursing, and your baby will generally receive only very
small quantities (usually less than one percent of your dose) through your milk. Keep in
mind, that even teeny newborns breastfeed after their mothers have received anesthesia
when giving birth.

Planning on Using Breast
and Bottle? - If you are at home with your children,
there is no need to run the risk that the use of a bottle is to the breastfeeding
relationship. Although this arrangement can certainly work for women who must,
breastfeeding works optimally with feeding at the breast only. I have seen articles in
popular parenting magazines touting the convenience of doing both, but here are some
reasons why it isn't always as easy as it may seem.
