Inquiry. Impulse buy yesterday. Pure white dend. phal type. Big full blooms.
Marked Dend. Herota White. Anyone know anything about?
Zeynep
I checked Wildcatt and it is not in there, but that does not mean anything.
Jose

Hirota not Herota White. Use the string search capabilities of Wildcatt. String 'White', LOL .

Jose, thanks! You are an Encyclopedia! My orchid is more beautiful with
a name.
Sharon_in_Indiana
Gee Jose, that's great info. Where did you find it?
Jose
Wildcatt
Kathy_in_N_Calif
How do you get that to copy and paste? How do you do that?
Ahowle
I think Jose needs to give us a lesson on how to use Wildcatt. I know I
don't use it to its fullest capabilities.
barbara_in_no._CA
I second that, I can never get to where I wanted to get
Jose
Once you have the hybrid... go to genealogy... Ask to print, but instead
of routing to printer send to text file. Right button click, select all,
right button click, copy. And when you go to the place you want to paste
Ctrl v
Kathy_in_N_Calif
I tried that but you lost me...
Jose
A String Search in Wildcatt is easy since it is divided by breeding groups.
For each breeding group you go to Quick Information. There you click on
string search; you enter the string (It helps to have been in classifications
and entries for 32 years) and click [enter]. It will give you all the hybrids
with that string...scroll and search.
OK lets do an exercise in Wildcatt just for fun, IF you want... Ok all you Wildcatters go to your Wildcatt and open it.
Let's see all the information we can get from the first part: 'Select a Breeding Group'. Click on it now...
All of you know the breeding groups... So no problem there.
The first nice thing is the search function. Search for 'bulbophyllum' and tell me in what breeding group it is.
Sharon_in_Indiana
It's in Dendrobium
Jose
Once you click on bulbophyllum in the column over 'Search' the breeding
group is highlighted and you will know to look for bulbophyllums in Dendrobiums.
Now if you see in the third column you can get a list of all the intergeneric hybrids with bulbohyllum or hybrids with bulbophyllums. Click the 'List Intergenerics With This Genus' button and you can see it will give you a list which you can print or change to text file.
Click 'Return'.
Then click 'List All Members of this Genus'. It will give you a list of all hybrid bulbophyllums up to the date of the last update you have...again you can print or text file it.
Zeynep
I notice this one does ask you where to route it... like to printer or text
file... but some of the windows if you click on print, it automatically
prints. Do you know why?
Jose
In some windows it is expected that when you asked it was because you wanted
a hard copy. One of the old carryovers :-(
There are two more buttons in that section that are nice. 'List all Genera and the Composition' IS a nice list of all orchid genera used in hybridization to that date, the abbreviation and the composition. This is a must for all you who are registering plants in shows.
And the last button of that page is 'Find an Abbreviation'. It is a crosscheck in reverse. You place abbreviation and it will point to the genus. Try it. By the way, for a show I will print a copy of all genera and composition as a reference for all the people in the show...
Kathy_in_N_Calif
Jose, find dendrochilum....
Jose
It is not going to be in the breeding group part of Wildcatt since there
are no Hybrids. The breeding group includes the ones used in hybridization.
If you want Dendrochillum awards then one goes to the Awards Quarterly part
of the Program.
Kathy_in_N_Calif
AHA!!! I've never known how to use the AQ portion of the program either!!
LOL!!!
Sharon_in_Indiana
I sure am glad that I'm not the only one that has a problem with figuring
out how to use Wildcatt. I know that the stuff I have been looking up is
just scratching the surface of what the program can do.
Jose
OK. Here we get into the major problem with Wildcatt: The awards.
Please remember that Wildcatt has All Award Quarterlies - that is only 1970 to present. The AOS started awarding plants in 1932. So you have a void of 38 years, which is bad if you are considering a species for CBR. Those awards are included in 7 issues called Register of Awards. [CBR awards are only given once, and only to a previously unawarded species. So knowing if a species has a prior award is crucial. CBR stands for Certificate of Botanical Recognition -KB]
OK All go to the Awards Quarterly Section and lets play some there...
The first button you will see is attached to 'Genus'. Click it and you will open a list of Genera. You can select the genus from that list and click and it will be automatically be set in the window. Click on the button and select bulbophyllum. Once you select and click 'Return' you will see that the genus abbreviation is there in the 'Genus' window.
Do you have your genus windows with Bulb showing up?
Kathy_in_N_Calif
OK, mine says bulb, bulb, bulb. I come up with nothing.
Ahowle
I did too, but I fixed it, LOL!
Jose
Kathy, you hit the 'bulb' button three times...erase the last two.
Kathy_in_N_Calif
AHA!!! I'll try that. ART & JOSE!!! {BIG KISS} IT WORKED!!!!
Jose
If you were going to RUN QUERY now you will have all Bulbophyllum species
or hybrids Awarded from 1970 to time of your last update.
Run query now.
Now you have a raw list without order that contains all awarded plants from 1970 to the last date of your version of Wildcatt..... There is a button that reads 'Sort'. Hit that button
Ahowle
Is it possible to print this out to screen Jose?
Jose
Yes, Art, you can print it, but first we are going to play with it.
barbara_in_no._CA
Boy, this gets deeper and deeper.
Jose
The selection list allows you to sort by those variables...you select the
variables you want and transfer using the arrow button to the sorting order
column. We are going to sort by 'Award 1' and 'Award 1 Points', in that
order. Transfer the variables by selecting the first and clicking the arrow
and then the second and click the arrow. Then hit 'Sort'. The list is now
sorted by awards (starting with AM) and within the AM by points in increasing
order.
Zeynep
Where is species?? Only hybrids?
Jose
If you are sorting by 'awards' and 'points' all species and hybrids will
show as a matter of fact, if you did it right. 'Awards1' and 'Awards 1 Points'.
The first one in the list is a Bulb phalaenopsis.
OK, if you sorted by 'Awards' and 'Award Points' in that order the first plant listed is Bulbo phalaenopsis 'Sweet Dreams' AM AOS. Your cursor should be blinking there. Click 'Detail' and you get the description of plant as entered in AQ. Do it for the first plant in list.
Kathy_in_N_Calif
Any way to print that info, either the measurements or the description box?
Under [edit] select [copy to]?
Jose
That is the problem...to Print you have to print the whole list...Wildcatt
doesn't allow printing of individual entries
Kathy_in_N_Calif
OK, I thought not. The graph features are just what it says? Set up X and
Y axes and see what you get?
Jose
Wait, Kathy...let's go back to the AQ page. We can do more wonders with
the AQ page...go back to the AQ section.
Are we in AQ part? We can refine the search a lot more. Let's have fun now. You can select all bulbos that have won AMs by selecting AM from the 'Award' window. Hit the button in 'Awards' and select 'AM'. You will have bulbo in the genus window, and AM in the awards window. You will have 2 windows full. And then run query...
And you can sort...etc.
Kathy_in_N_Calif
You can put a State in and determine which are from Florida... put in FL
Jose
That list is boring. It is almost all Doris Dukes and Bill Thom's plants,
LOL!
Kathy_in_N_Calif
No Doubt!! It was the 1st state I could think of that might have awards!
Jose
Group, last fun thing on the AQ page for today: Change genus to cattleya.
You change by hitting 'Reset' first. Tell me when you have cattleyas in
the 'Genus' window.
Zeynep
In AQ? OK, I have C
Jose
In the description box type '..yellow..' Notice the two dots before and
after the word 'yellow'.
Did you type ..yellow.. in description? If so, run that. It will give you
all awarded cattleyas where the word 'yellow' appears in the description.
LOL.
Next Saturday we continue with that page...
Kathy_in_N_Calif
Great!! I still had 'AM' checked, so I got a list of all yellow AM Catts.
This is right up my alley!! I was wondering how to research yellow catts!!
So does it look for ANY word yellow? Including yellow throat? Yellow eyes?
Yellow veins? So its not particular?
CJ_Orchidflowerchild
Well, they ARE very open parameters....
Jose
The word 'yellow' is anywhere in the description...It can have white with
yellow, etc. This Saturday we refine the search. We can play at tad more,
but let's leave something for Saturday...
barbara_in_no._CA
This is really more then I ever need with Wildcatt. Now I know how to operate,
I can use it more often.
Ahowle
Wow. I have had program for 2 years and look what I learned in 10 min.
Sharon_in_Indiana
Isn't it amazing what we learn from those that know what they are doing?
LOL
The end for now
