History of the Brant Suzuki String School The Brant Suzuki String School was started in 1988 by Virginia Little in response to the growing interest in the Suzuki-style violin lessons she had been giving since 1981. Having taught privately since 1974, it soon became obvious that this method of teaching music had benefits that reached beyond the students' musical abilities. Dr. Suzuki's goal was to help children fulfill their capabilities as human beings. He said, "Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens; noble human beings. If a child hears fine music from the day of his birth, and learns to play it himself, he develops sensitivity, discipline, and endurance. He gets a beautiful heart." Suzuki built his ideas around the fact that children naturally and easily learn their native language. His approach to teaching violin was modelled after the way in which children learn language. In the supportive environment fostered by the Suzuki Method, children learn to enjoy music and develop confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline, concentration, and the determination to try difficult things -- qualities that are sorely needed in our time. The Brant Suzuki String School has programs for violin, viola, cello, and double bass. It also provides our students with optional theory classes, ensemble instruction, a junior and senior string orchestra program, and many opportunities to perform in and around the Brantford area. The School operates from September to June each year, with the option of summer lessons.
