Some History If You Will
Summer of 1999, I spent in Tennesee, visiting one of my oldest Internet friends, Sheila. It was September, the new TV season was just starting. Together with Sheila I was checking out this and that pilot. There was one pilot we knew we were not going to miss, and that was the pilot for a new John Wells show, "Third Watch". The reason was very simple - me and Sheila were (are) both very fierce Sunset Beach fans and after SUN's demise we were checking out all new TV shows which featured any of its fabulous cast. Third Watch snached Eddie Cibrian, whom we knew as Cole DesChannel, the noble thief. Although Cole/Eddie was not the reason we were hooked on Sunset, he was part of SUN and its legacy and we had to see how he was doing "beyond the sunset".
Sheila liked Third Watch, but Joanna became hooked. But not because of Eddie, whose character on TW was so different from SUN's Cole that it was annoying, but because of a certain pair of soulful eyes and the way this pair of eyes looked at a certain slim woman, his partner. Bobby nailed me to the chair during the 45 minutes of Welcome to Camelot and I was dying to see if he and Kim would become the next Carol and Ross.
Before leaving the States to come back to my homeland, Poland, I had a chance to catch the follow up episode, Anywhere but Here, and regretfully, I had to leave Third Watch and Bobby behind. I kept myself updated on the going-ons in Bobby Caffey's life by following the detailed recaps published on the Mighty Big TV board. But then Kim rejected Bobby's affection, and I, dismayed, stopped reading the recaps. To satisfy my Bobby craving I went to see "The Bone Collector" - a short scene only, but what a treat after months of not seeing him on screen.
In June 2000 I was back in the States. Several months later, while visiting Los Angeles I caught the rerun of season one's finale and once again I was taken by Bobby Cannavale. I didn't care much about Kim at this point, but I realized that I still deeply care about the character of Bobby Caffey. A week later I was back in Tennessee. Catching up on my e-mails, I found out that TVN, a Polish station I often watch, has acquired rights to Third Watch's first season and had already started airing it. By the end of September I was back in Poland, soon enough to catch Hell Is What You Make Of It. The adventure began again.
How The Site Came To Be
It only took a month of me watching Third Watch regularly for my fingertips to start itching. There was this fabulous character and this fabulous actor and not a single one website devoted to him? Something was wrong with this picture. "I've been maintaing three other huge websites for the last two years," I thought, "why not open the fourth one?" I certainly had the tools, the skills and the motivation.
About two weeks and numerous engine searches later I had the website ready. Once I had the formula (aka the design), it all went very quickly. The hard part was collecting the info I needed, gathering bits and pieces, confirming and reconfirming the information. Surely, Bobby Cannavale couldn't have played the little Nicky in "Gloria", Bobby Cannavale has long stopped being a small kid! Why isn't there any info in "3 am", the Spike Lee-produced movie, that Bobby was cast in? Did Bobby really appear on "The Sopranos"? His IMDB page doesn't provide that information, nor does any interview with Bobby, so surely, this info must be incorrect... And so on.
I subscribed to all possible Third Watch related mailing lists, searched for Third Watch message boards and on November 15, 2000 posted the information that a new Bobby Cannavale webpage was opening. The beginnings were slow, but that came as no suprise to me. Three other websites, remember? You start from 5 hits a day and after six months you get 500 hits a day - that kind of experience was not alien to me. The word had to get around and you needed time for that. Been there before.
Slowly, gradually, the daily hits number grew. I've met new friends, Bobby fans like me, who started helping me with material and info on Bobby (see credits). Info on Bobby was hard to find, so their help was invaluable. Sometimes there would be a week without an update, because there was nothing new to report.
In February the diseaster struck. It started as vague spoilers, which I refused to believe in, but soon became the grim reality. Bobby Caffey was killed off. Ironically that awful event generated an enormous number of visitors checking out the site and the counter went up very quickly.
Bobby found a new job, but this fan wasn't going anywhere anyway. Bobby Caffey may be dead, but Bobby Cannavale has a long an successful career coming and I will be there to let you know all about it.
