Weight Loss Tips from F.S.F. Members

IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME

 

Friends Supporting Friends began in July of 1999. We are friends who met on the internet and collectively have lost over 1000#'s. Here are some tips from our members. 

"DIET" is a four letter word! Get rid of it! You are on a life changing journey to be healthy and learn new habits. ! TiggerR

Don't wait until 'tomorrow' to start over when you slip up. Pick yourself up and start over right now. ~ Clairica

Face your Stuff; do not Stuff your Face. ~ Rachael

Drink your water - NO EXCUSES. ~ Shelley

Use hand weights (3-5 lbs) at home. The feeling of lifting weights is a powerful one, and adds to your self-esteem. ~ Krista

Don't beat yourself up for having an off-day. Remember it's the beating not the eating which defeats you in the long run. ~ Penny

Drink a glass of water BEFORE each meal ~ Sheryl

Choose exercise that is FUN to do. If you don't like some form of exercise, don't do it. Try something else. ~ Krista

Journal everything that goes into your mouth or through your mind. ~ Shelley

Make eating purposeful, not mindless. Before you put food in your mouth, peel it, unwrap it, plate it and sit. Engage all of the senses in the pleasure of nourishing your body. ~ Rachael

Drink two glasses of water before you eat. ~ Linda

Do NOT eliminate your favourite foods. You will feel like you are being "punished" and when you do binge (and you will!) you will have more than you would if you hadn't felt "cheated" of your fave things. ~ Krista

Keep it simple--food plan + water + exercise= success! ~ TiggerR

Keep in mind there are no quick fixes therefore commit to making life long changes in your daily habits. Slow and steady wins the race. ~ Penny

 Keep yourself informed. Read all you can and make informed decisions for yourself. Don't rely on the latest get-you-to-buy-it magazine diet.~ Heather

The dreaded chewing thing...they say at least 20 chews per bite!!!!~ Sheryl

Get everyone in your house on board with healthy eating. it's a lot easier to steer clear of the junk food if there's none in the house! and exercising with those same folks passes the time and makes working out FUN! ~ Mo

Treat yourself like you treat your best friend. ~Shelley

One small change over time really does make a difference. Believe it and see what happens! ~ Paula

Try to make your exercise interesting and exciting so that you don't get bored. If you like to garden that is great exercise. If you like to read then try listening to books on tape as you walk. Try dancing or walking with your kids. ~ Clairica

Eat slowly...it takes at least 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain you are full!!~ Sheryl

Get rid of your "fat clothes" when you are into a new set of sizes. It is way too easy to slip back into the larger sizes if they are there hanging in your closet. ~ Krista

Make smaller, more realistic goals...it doesn't seem so overwhelming then! ~ Shelley

Don't take orders from a cookie! ~ TiggerR  

If sweets are a particular problem for you, make it a rule to only have them in the presence of others, away from home, or on special occasions. ~ Penny

Remember we are not perfect! It is okay to slip and have to be picked up. "Be patient--God isn't finished with me yet!" ~ TiggerR

Every morning as you wake up remember to tell yourself "Today is going to be a great day" and give yourself a hug. ~Clairica

At the end of the day remember to praise yourself for what you did good today. Let go of the "food guilt" and forgive yourself. Tomorrow is a fresh day. ~Clairica

Go to exercise classes. You will make new friends, feel like part of a group, enjoy great music and have a blast!

Do exercise videos in the comfort of your home. Try new ones - rent them from the video store or share with friends.~ Krista

If you get off track or can't even find the track...build yourself a new one then. Build it better and stronger and more level.~ Clairica 

Mix Crystal Lite with double the water it normally calls for. You will still get the great taste and it will make it easier to get your water intake in. ~ Krista

There is no miracle cure to weight loss. It will not happen over night. All journeys require you to make changes and these changes will naturally let you lose weight without pills or spending lots of money on a quick fix solution. ~ TiggerR

Stop thinking of junk food as "treats" or "goodies" why consider a food that makes you fat, or decays your teeth as a type of reward? Reward yourself with something that makes you look or feel good. ~ Penny

Choose lower fat selections. For example, instead of sandwich meat from the "regular" section of the store, spend the extra and get the low-fat / reduced fat varieties. You are worth the extra money; after all think of the money we used to spend on JUNK! ~ Krista

Start off exercising in small amounts, then build up. ~Shelley   

When you come to a mountain, let it make you stronger, don't let it make you quit. ~Shelley

DECIDE IN ADVANCE what you are going to eat at a restaurant. THEN ORDER first when you get there in a group. This way you are not tempted by whatever others are ordering. When that waiter or waitress arrives and asks if the table is ready to order, raise your hand and say "I AM!" You can even call a restaurant in advance and ask if they have a certain dish. THEN you won't have to even look at the menu.~ Dee

Never underestimate the power of positive thinking, if you envision yourself thin it makes it easier to eat that way!~ Shelley

If you are craving something, distract yourself..go for a walk, call a friend, take a bath..whatever works.~Sheryl

Look at a pound of butter and remember how it looks for the times that you 'only lose a pound'!~ Shelley

Be prepared. If nibbling is a problem for you during those times you are preparing meals,  have some sliced carrots, celery, and your favorite raw veggie's there ready to chew on. ~ Penny

Don't let anyone tell you their way is better if you've found something that is working for you.~ Heather

Don't become a slave to the scale. Set a day, once a week or once a month, and weight yourself only on that day.~ GMA
