Our Origins and Headquarters
House Blackrune and the Blackrune Free Company were both founded on September 24th AS XVII (1983), in the Barony of the Angels, during the baronial reign of Baron Taliesin de Acre. Their area of origin is the Canton of the Canyons, in the Barony of Angels, in the Kingdom of Caid , within the Society for Creative Anachronism.
House Blackrune was originally founded as a Viking household but members now have a wide variety of personas. The Blackrune Free Company is a fighting unit sponsored by House Blackrune. Membership in the household extends but does not require membership in the Free Company. Membership in the Free Company does not extend membership to the household.
There are two types of membership in House Blackrune.
Ring-Bearer and Standard
Ring-bearers are those who claim Blackrune as a major portion of their participation in the SCA and wish to wear a visible symbol of their membership for all to see. Follow this link for a brief discussion about the Household Rings.
Standard members are those who maintain membership in House Blackrune and participate in its activities.
In practice there is not a lot of difference between standard members and ring bearers except for two things. If the household has an upcoming activity the ring bearers are more likely to be expected to be involved in it while standard members, although certainly welcome to join in, do not have the same expectations. Also Ring Bearers are expected to 'Show the Colors' more frequently.
Members who wish to become ring bearers should discuss it with Stromburg, Gulliver, Beoir or any of the other ring bearers. They will tell you the traditions that go along with being a Ring-Bearer.
Many members also have membership in other groups such as the Bloody Harlequins, Temple's Hope, the Indigo Rose , House Blackspear, and Sietch Persistent. Members participate in many areas of the SCA including brewing, music, cooking, metalwork, leatherwork, costuming and calligraphy. Members of Blackrune also have a long history of active participation running events and giving service to the society on many levels. Members have held office on the Cantonial, Baronial and Kingdom levels.

The Blackrune Free Company is a mercenary group that is sponsored by House Blackrune. The BFC is a fighting unit designed to give lone fighters and small groups a place to fight, without having to dedicate themselves to long term service to a territorial group. This flexible design arose when we noticed that each of the territorial based groups, at the time, would receive preferential treatment when it came to the ordering of battle on the field. The lone fighters would be grouped together with little regard for their abilities.
New groups and lone fighters who are looking for someplace to gain experience and a group to fight with should feel free to contact us for information.
The Terms of the Freesword Contract depend on the group or the individual. The Blackrune Free Company hires fighters for three types of service: By the War, By the Year, and Long Term.
Units in service with the Blackrune Free Company are welcome to display their unit's device in the upper corner of the Free Company shields as shown below.

The Blackrune Free Company fights in the
Army of Caid , with the White Lightning Brigade under the command of Brigadier General Lord Ivan Blackrune.
Blackrune has received Caid's

The First Tuesday of each month is a 3rd Brigade/Blackrune Free Company War Practice. We include archers and artillery during our war practices.
