This site provides information about bird sightings at McDowell Grove Forest Preserve, located in DuPage County in northeastern Illinois. Since Jan 1st, 2000 170 bird species have been identified in McDowell Grove -- 60 have been confirmed breeding in the preserve.
The Bird List contains the list of species seen on a monthly basis. Refer to Denis Kania's Checklist of the Birds of DuPage County for information on how common or rare each species is in DuPage County.
McDowell Grove is an excellent place to see migrants. See the Warblers. page for information on when and where warblers might be present. Refer to the Migrants page to see where many of "our" birds spend their winters.

Still Sedge Wrens in the Big Square, several Baltimore Orioles around the picnic ground. Yellow-throated Vireo on the north side between the river and the path.May 9, 2007
Pair of Sedge Wrens in the Big Square, pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers along the regional trail heading south from the picnic ground. Canada Warbler, Wilson's Warblers, Black-throated Green Warblers, Tennessee Warblers, and male American Redstarts all present. Pair of male Scarlet Tanagers at the south end of the preserve, along with at least two singing Wood Thrushes.May 8, 2007
Only a scatterred few warblers today: Golden-winged Warbler, Northern Parula, Palm Warblers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Wilson's Warbler at the south end of the preserve. Except for the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (both male and female) and Baltimore Orioles the picnic ground were fairly quiet.May 5, 2007 (From Spring Bird Count IBET)
Activity was fairly good at McDowell Grove first thing in the morning with quite a few warblers and many Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. Highlights among the warblers were Tennessee, Magnolia, Blackburnian, Wilsons and one Blackpoll. Best bird was a Summer Tanager seen near the Big Square area. One Ruby-throated Hummingbird was also seen. Did have a couple of Swainson's Thrushes and one Wood Thrush.May 3, 2007
Only a scatterred few Palm Warblers and Yellow-rumped Warblers between 9AM and 10AM this morning along the edge of the river. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (both male and female) present. Lots of White-throated Sparrows and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers.May 2, 2007
Over 100 Palm Warblers and over 100 Yellow-rumped Warblers between 9AM and 10AM this morning along the edge of the river in three major flocks. Interestingly, only located one other species: a single Black-and-White Warbler. Other birds of note included a Broad Winged Hawk, a Green Heron, and a Baltimore Oriole.March 24, 2007
