The George Observatory is the highest point in the park. We are surrounded by lakes, large oak trees with spanish moss dripping from them and creatures of the south. That’s right, alligators, not to mention a few white-tailed deer, raccoons, possums, and armadillos.
It is open every Saturday from 3:00 – 10:00 pm. In the afternoon the solar scope is set up and a live video feed is sent downstairs to a monitor for anyone that is interested at looking at solar flares or prominences that happened just eight minutes ago on our star the sun. In the evening there are slide show presentations showing the wonders of the night sky given for anyone that has bought a ticket for the Gueymard 36” telescope. The tickets are $3.00 for adults and children and go on sale at 5:00 pm in our gift shop. The smaller domes require a ticket and a hand stamp which is $2.00. Later that evening the domes will open and amateur astronomers will set up their telescopes for you to see the wonders of our universe…
