| Located just
southeast of Goldsboro, Cliffs of the Neuse State Park offers a variety
of year round activities. Hiking, canoeing, swimming, and fishing
are some of the more popular pursuits at the 860 acre park. The highlight
of the park are the 90 foot high multi-colored cliffs over the Neuse River.
The cliffs which show exposed sand, clay, shells and fossils line the south
banks of the river. The cliffs are best seen by either canoe or kayak.
Although the colorful cliffs are not viewed from the hiking trails along
it, the trails to offer impressive views of the peaceful Neuse River lined
with Spanish Moss.
Cliffs of the Neuse State Park was established in 1945 when local property owner Lionel Weil donated land around the cliffs to become a state park. Prior to Weil's generous donation, the land around the cliffs was quite popular as a tourist destination for its 'renowned' mineral springs...or whiskey stills. Today, thanks to Weil's efforts, the Cliffs of the Neuse is an area preserved for generations to come. Park Photos:
