STAFFORD's 3-RUN BLOW GIVES SOUTH 3-1 WIN

AUSTIN, TEXAS (AP) – Dean Stafford, Tyler outfielder, blasted a home run over the left field fence with two mates aboard Friday night to give the South All-Stars a 3-1 victory over the North All-Stars in the first annual Big State League All-Star Game. A crowd of 3,187 turned out despite threatening weather. Stafford’s blow, which found Billy Capps of Tyler and Lon Goldstein of Temple on base, broke up a tight game that saw the North holding a one-run lead when the circuiter came. Pitching dominated the classic as eight hurlers surrendered only 12 base hits for both teams. Fred Smith, Temple righthander, gained credit for the victory although he was touched for three hits and the only run the North All-Stars managed. Jack Bumgarner, Texarkana righthander, was charged with the lost, giving up five hits in his two-inning stint on the mound. The North All-Stars scored their only run in the seventh when Wilcy Moore, Longview left fielder, led off with a single to right, romped to third on Texarkana’s George McAfee’s single into right field and scored after Bob Mainzer, Wichita Falls shortstop, flied to right. A snappy double play kept the North All-Stars from doing any future damamge. With one away in the bottom of the eighth, Capps, who was the South All-Stars manager, slashed a single to right and Goldstein blooped a single to left field to put runners on first and second. Then, Stafford, who has hit only one home run at this field this season, drove a curveball over the left field fence to win the ball game.
