We
are excited to introduce you to a very active
club at BHS, the Future
Educators of America (FEA).
Future Educators of America is sponsored by
Phi Delta Kappa,
the professional fraternity in education.
The purpose of FEA is to coordinate information for students
about teaching as a profession, employment opportunities,
financial assistance options, and educational issues such as
professional mobility, diversity, job security, and other matters.
During the Spring term of 2001-2002 school year, Megan Goldsborough established
a FEA chapter at
Beaverton High School for students like herself who are
interested in exploring teaching as a career option.
Our Mission Statement: To provide exposure for Beaverton High
School students to the field of education through community
projects working with children and teachers.
Our Motto: Be a Friend, Touch a Life; Be an Educator,
Touch Lives Forever
Why do we need FEA at BHS?
The good health of our nation's schools depends on bringing the brightest and best of
today's students into classrooms as new teachers. Teaching needs to be viewed as a
promising career option. Particularly needed in the future will be teachers from diverse
backgrounds, who are sensitive to and match the increasing diversity in our classrooms.
A national teacher shortage is predicted in the coming years. By the year 2005 Oregon
will need to hire more than 10,000 new teachers and less than half that many are scheduled
to graduate with teaching degrees. During the past two years nearly half of Oregon's schools
have had difficulty recruiting for teaching positions, particularly in key areas such
as mathematics, science, languages, music, bilingual
education, English-as-a-second language (ESL), and special education.
