OUR STORY

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, April 9
Single mom Lila Basnet is busy; her time is spent either taking care of her children or trying to find kind-hearted donors for covering the medical expenses of her children. Her children-seven-year-old Bhawana and 11-year-old Bhupi-suffer from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells, characterised by the overproduction and continuous multiplication of malignant and immature white blood cells in the bone marrow, which could be fatal if left untreated.

Although the doctors say that they can be cured by bone marrow transplant, the troubles don't end for their mother Lila. The transplant costs around Rs 112,000 for each child, let alone the additional expenses following the transplant. She has even contacted the doctors at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai in India but money seems to be the only obstacle.
"Although Bhawana is too young to understand the full implications, Bhupi understands it all. He questions me and cries," Lila recounts.
However, Lila admits that money is not what she is looking for. "It would be fine if someone just took the kids to the hospital for their treatment."
As the doctors advice her to get her children treated as soon as possible, she is running against time due to her poor financial status. Doctors have warned that leukemia would advance to another stage and create complications. Her story in eKantipur last week garnered enthusiastic response from people in Nepal and abroad. She thanks those people who are willing to help, adding that she would contact them herself if she had their contact information. With tears rolling down her cheeks, she says, "Please ask people to help. They would receive blessings from my children's soul. It would be punya."

7-year-old Bhawana, brother await helping hands

By Sanjeeb Phunyal

KATHMANDU, April 3 - Seven-year-old Bhawana Basnet and her 11-year-old brother Bhupi are going through hard times these days, with their mother visiting places for generous hands for the treatment of both the children.
Nature is unpredictable and unfortunately, these kids suffer from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, which requires bone marrow transplantation and can not be treated in Nepal.
The doctors at Bir Hospital have referred the siblings to a hospital in Mumbai, India, for the transplant, which costs around seven hundred thousand rupees for each.
"I might have to take them hospital anytime to infill them with blood if they vomit blood or anything happens to them," says, Lila Basnet, a single parent. "Doctors have told me to go to India for treatment as soon as possible, but I do not have the means to do so," adds Lila, who is a district health officer.
She has not been able to collect the money needed for the treatment of the children. "Mummy, please get me treated any how; I could pay back after I grow up," Lila quotes her son Bhupi as saying, with tears rolling down her misty eyes.
