BESKYDY..... The range of mountains linking Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia. The Beskydy Dancers take their name from these mountains and present a rich and vibrant repertoire of folk dances, songs and music from all three regions. |
| Waltzes and polkas from Bohemia - both gentle and boisterous; swashbuckling recruiting dances from Moravia; the famous Czardas from Slovakia - exhilerating and fast. Many of our dances combine with mime and song to tell a story; the village fair, the craft dance of the cobbler and the blacksmith, and the barmaid's skirt weighing all of 8 lbs. A lyrical courting dance contrasts with a humourous hat dance, and in the outlaw's dance, skillfully brandished axes tell of a turbulent past. | ![]() |

Since the group's foundation nearly 50 years ago, we have performed all over the country, in theatres, at festivals, fetes and charity events. We have been warmly received on our visits to Czechoslovakia and now the Czech and Slovak Republics. These visits enrich our repertoire and enable us to bring to our audiences the true flavour of the folk dance tradition of the former Czechoslovakia. |
| We perform
in varied and colourful costumes accompanied by our own musicians on traditional
instruments. Performances can vary in length from 20 minutes upwards. The group rehearses every Monday evening from 7pm to 9.30pm at Holland Staff Club, Imperial College, Callendar Road off Prince Consort Road, Kensington SW7. Nearest Underground stations are Gloucester Road and South Kensington. Buses 9,10,14,30,49,52,74. New dancers, from beginners to advanced, and musicians always welcome. |
