Since the show deals with teeners and their problems in school and at
home, we threw some typical problems faced by the bagets crowd today at
Karel.
Pimples. She says this was a problem many years ago but she didn't
panic about them. In time, her face cleared up without her having to go
regularly go to a derma. Today, when she has pimples caused by late night
shoots, she uses toothpaste.
Wardrobe. Karel doesn't really care for name brands. "I'd rather go
to Greenhills and look for bargains." She dresses for comfort rather than
for style.
Extra pounds. She wants to lose weight because some of her co-stars
say she looks fat on screen. So she's forsaken rice and when she's hungry,
"tinutulugan ko na lang," says the 15-year-old. She's already lost three
pounds and has five more pounds to go.
Allowance. "Okay lang," she replies when we ask if she's happy with
the allowance she receives from her parents. Translation: She'd be even
happier if she got more. "Sometimes, they forget so I have to make utang
from the yaya," she sighs.
Now that she has a regular show, her mom and dad have told her that she
can do "whatever I want to do with the money." But they have advised her
to save for her college education. The idea is for her to just spend 20
percent of what she earns.
The teener is not maluho. When I ask her if she wants to buy an
expensive cell phone, she showed me her Ericsson, which is definitely not
as expensive as the newer ones which can take pictures.
Parenting. Karel's parents are separated but she has adjusted to
the situation. She admits that when she was much younger, this was a big
problem for her. Today, she stays with her dad on weekdays and with her
mom on weekends. She loves them both and they have continued to shower
Karel with all the love and attention she deserves.
Discipline. Her mom is very protective about Karel when it comes to
keeping her away from bad influences, like friends and acquaintances who
smoke or experiment with recreational drugs. Her dad, on the other hand,
advises her on how to carry herself. "He's very particular about what I
wear, kasi nagdadalaga na raw ako. He's my fashion consultant," she says.
Boys. We ask her if she can live without boys. After a long pause,
she replies, "Let me think about that"-and lets out a big laugh. She
doesn't want to get involved right now because she wants to concentrate on
her schooling and career. "May mga crush ako, pero hanggang kilig lang
yon," she stresses.
Telebabad. Many years ago, she would sneak out of her room and use
the cordless phone to talk for hours with her friends, both male and
female. The first time she talked to boys, she found it exciting. Now, she
doesn't want to talk to them if it's just to waste time on the phone.
Internet. She admits that she loves to surf the internet and since
her dad has a subscription that provides unlimited access, Karel uses the
computer for long periods of time. She chats a lot but only with people
she knows, especially friends who are abroad. They arrange to be on line
at a certain time and chat on the computer, which is definitely cheaper
than using the phone.
Finally, we ask her how it feels to be "no longer a child but not yet an
adult." She tells us that she's still very much a child. For instance,
she's still crazy about the Power Puff Girls and she's not in a hurry to
be independent and live away from her mom and dad. But doing the weekly
show is a big step on her way to being a certified adult
