The Belize Association of Michigan was founded in early 1986 by Dr. Lennox Pike, in response to an initiative taken by the Consortium for Belize Development, Inc. of which Dr. Pike was to become the first elected president to put together a North America wide-i.e. USA and Canada organization of BeliZean societies and associations, and also individuals. The purpose of this initiative which is also the purpose of existence of the Belize Association of Michigan, is to assist the people of Belize in various apsects of development of country and self, by channeling various resources, contacts, expertise, and even a little guidance, in well structured programs, to Belize; and by promoting the education, care, culture, and well being of people.
The Belize Association of Michigan is one of the truly active and vibrant members of the Consostium. It has succesfully completed an ambitious list of projects, geared to benefit the motherland, for every year of its existence-quite apart from working with other member groups of the Consortium, on what are called "National Projects."
Throughout all of this activity the Belize Association of Michigan has held its membership together, through a very enjotable program of fellowship and friendship that has hailed as a model for other organizations.
Its program with Belize itself are conducted through effective liason with the goverment of the day the private sector, some voluntary organizations, some churches, and with certain individuals, i.e. artists and craftsmen.
