| Most of my structures and scenery in my landscape paintings are imaginary. I recalled, as a child, I once hiked in a deep mountain, suddenly, I heard quiet and tranquil monks' chanting flowing in the air from a secluded temple. Although I was not able to reach the remote temple, the image of a peace and tranquil Buddhist temple in an untamed mountain has been constantly in my mind. Here I am, I imagine, I recollect, I think, I feel and I create my dream Shangri-La in my paintings.
In addition to landscape paintings, I also love bamboo paintings. My bamboo painting experience began in early 70's. Bamboo painting was a particular favorite of the scholar-painters, for its specialized form, for its final test of brushwork. It takes many years or even lifetime to master. To Chinese scholars, bamboo symbolized an upright yet humble man who could adapt to adversity and change without sacrificing his integrity. Hand made rice paper, brush, ink, and Chinese pigments are the materials used in my paintings. The mastery of brush handling, the skill of mixing water and ink and the knowledge of the characteristics of paper are the basic and interlocking requirements for commanding the technique of Chinese painting. | I incorporate a variety of Chinese pigments and ink in my paintings to create my dream Shangri-La. An important aspect in achieving the tranquility and serenity of my work is the mixed subtle colors which are extracted from plants and minerals.
My fascination with Chinese landscape painting derives from my love for nature. The infinite and eternal of nature has always reminded me the Chinese say “The wise men find pleasure in water; the virtuous find pleasure in mountains”. |
