The following is a copy of the lesson plan I used with my 7th grade class. The lesson is about creating a Mythology Newspaper based upon the research and the work did throughout the unit we did for six week on Greek Mythology. This project has two parts to it. The first part is done individually by each of the students. They each are assigned to write a news story over one of the gods. Within this news story they had to focus on the five W's and an event they read about in the book. The second part of this involves group work. The students were broken into groups of three or four with each group covering a different section of the paper. The sections we used were: sports, comics, obituaries, life, local, Dear Rhea, Ads and Weather. Within these groups they had different responsibilities and assignments. The students were given four days to work on in class. They had to hand in on the final day a copy of all the work their group completed. We then organized it all into a newspaper, which we shared with the rest of the school and their families. I found that this activity was a great form of review for the students over the myth we had read in class. It was also a productive way for introducing newspaper writing as well as reading and writing in the same class period. On the following pages you will find my lesson plan and how I graded the students on their individual work and their group work. I hope you find this helpful in your teaching. The book used for this unit was: Heroes, Gods and Monsters of The Greek Myths. By Bernard Evslin. |
