Becky's Aquarium Page

I am starting a new hobby along with the help of my husband!  For many years now I have enjoyed having an aquarium.  It first started when I bought a 20 gal. tank off my brother when I was in high school.  I started with tropical fish and then moved to goldfish because they are so colorful and perky, like little, wet golden retrievers.  In college, I bought a 45 gal. tank because my $1.50 goldfish outgrew their 20 gal. tank.  About a year after moving out to Minnesota my original goldfish died.  They were 7 years old.  I bought some more, but they weren't very healthy and I ended up with 1 medium sized goldfish in a 45 gal. tank.

Realizing it looked a little ridiculous, I bought a little tank for Fish (nice name, huh?) and I am going to convert my large aquarium into a marine aquarium!  This is a very expensive and very time-consuming project.  I am going to use this home page as a record of my new project.

So far I have orderred a book from Amazon.com and read some at the library.  When my book comes in I'm going to really start cleaning up the glass on my tank.  Right now it's in our basement, but I want it moved to our kitchen/dining room where it will be enjoyed more.  Since I'm not currently working it will probably take some time to get it set up.  These things aren't cheap, neither are the fish!

I do believe this is going to be a rewarding hobby for my husband and I. The most enjoyable part will be our working on this together!

We have done some actual research on marine aquariums now.  Turns out these things are VERY expensive, but I will not be dismayed.  We're going to wait a little bit before we start. I think we'll be going with a black and white percula clown or two, and some blue and green chromis.  As for invertebrates I want oodles of hermit crabs (red and blue ones,) horseshoe crabs, snails, fire
Here is the most recent pic of our whole tank.  No fish yet, but lots of inverts!

shrimp, peppermint shrimp, and a starfish of some sort, maybe a brittle star or a serpent starfish.

We were a little dismayed about the prices of the equipment when we went to our local pet store, but we can find everything on-line with better prices.

When we are more experienced with this hobby, we'll probably get a dwarf angel.  Also, my husband and I will be looking into a much larger aquarium if all goes well with this one, probably 125-150 gallons.  I really would like a tang someday.  They are very pretty and quite active.

Originally, I was thinking of getting damsels, but after some research, I think our tank can do without them.  They are mean little guys.

A little more about me:
I am currently an unemployed biologist.  I hope to go back to school one day and pick up a masters degree in conservation biology.  I am a wife and mother and this is so important to me that I quit my job in January 2004 to be with my family more.  I have many projects and hobbies going on at once.  I play the violin and I have a pretty good soprano voice, music is an important escape for me.  I'm an avid reader, I read as much as most other Americans watch tv.  I love the outdoors and am an avid camper/hiker.  I am on a quest to visit all of our great country's national parks, and a few of Canadas.  So far, I have been to Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii, The Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Theodore Roosevelt (Painted Canyon,)  the Everglades, and Voyaguers in northern Minnesota.  I'm saving Yosemite for when my kid(s) are older and can really enjoy it!
