Size G crochet hook. (I crochet tight, adjust your hook size so that the Navy Blue starting square is 2-3/4 inches.
Finished square is 6 inches.
Rnd 1: With Navy Blue yarn, ch 4, in 1st ch work 2 dc, ch 2, (3dc, ch 2) 3 times, join with st st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 2: Sl st to ch 2 sp, (ch3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp, repeat from * in remaining ch 2 spaces, join.
Rnd 3: Sl st across to ch 2 sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp,
*(3 dc in sp between next set of 3 dc; 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner), repeat from * 3 times, join. Finish off.
Stripes:
Row 1: Starting at lower left corner of Navy Blue square, join white with a sl st in ch 2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, 3 dc in each sp across to corner,
(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner, 3 dc in each sp across to upper right corner, ending with 3 dc in last space. Fasten off white.
Row 2: Keeping on right side of square, join red with a sl st in top of ch 3 at lower left. Ch 3, 3 dc in next sp, and each sp across to corner, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner, 3 dc in each sp across to upper right, end row with 1 dc in last st. Fasten off red.
Row 3: Join white with a sl st in sp between ch 3 and first set of 3 red dc, (ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp, 3 dc in each sp across to corner, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner,
3 dc in each sp across to upper right corner, ending with 3 dc in sp between last set of 3 red dc and last red dc. Fasten off white.
Row 4: Repeat row 2
Row 5: Repeat row 3
Row 6: Repeat row 2
Edging:
Join Navy Blue yarn in any sp between sets of 3 dc, (ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp,
3 dc in each sp around, with (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Star:
Rnd 1: With white yarn, ch 2, work 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with a sl st.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (10 sc)
Rnd 3: *(Ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next 2 sc); repeat from * 4 times (5 points made), except after 5th point, do only 1 sc, then join with a sl st in next sc. Fasten off, leaving a LONG tail. Tack star to navy blue area of square. Weave in ends.
