Atienza daughter earns U.S. university doctorate in physics

BATANGAS CITY (Philippines).
Suzette Atienza Pabit of Batangas City received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) in Physics on graduation day, May 1, 2004, of the University of Florida in the United States.

Dr Pabit is the daughter of Sergio “Serging” Atienza, senior Member of the Provincial Board of Batangas and a past president of the Rotary Club of Downtown Batangas City, and wife Ched.

She is a St Bridget's Elementary School valedictorian and a University of the Philippines magna cum laude.

In a letter to her family, she said, “... my Ph. D. degree is in Physics but research specialization is Molecular Biophysics — protein conformational dynamics. “I hope the work that I do has impact in medicine and health improvement.”

She has accepted an offer fora post-doctoral research fellow position from the Physics Department at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She says, “Emory is a smaller school than U.F. but better-ranked. Nasa top 20 universities siya dito sa U.S. Of course, Harvard and Caltech and the like are in the top 10.”

Her husband, Ed Pabit, will stay at Gainesville, Florida, until he graduates, in 2005. “Ed is doing his Ph. D. in Materials Science and Engineering,” she says. “His specialization is Advanced Ceremics Materials.”
