Baramond

Baramond is a version of the classic Garamond typeface. Based on Original Garamond, also known as Garamond Antiqua, it features straight, flag-shaped serifs for elegant readability. Uniquely, Baramond includes the typographical ligatures for the characters fi, fl, ff, ffi and ffl, all accessible from within the standard Windows character set (just like the accented characters).

Baramond is suitable for screen display and printing purposes, where it excels as an aesthetically pleasant replacement for the ubiquitous and ugly Times New Roman. Baramond is supplied in the standard styles and weights – Roman (normal type), Italic, Bold and Bold Italic – as four TrueType Font (.ttf) files, which you can download here together as a convenient Zip file.

You can access the ligature characters by holding the ALT key and entering the digits shown in the table on the right using the numeric keypad, or via the Windows Character Map or your word processor’s Insert Symbol function.

Baramond is also available for the Mac, and you can download it here as a compressed (.sit) file. All four styles are included. Many thanks to Julien Tessier for providing the Mac conversion. You will need to use the StuffIt expander to decompress the font files, and then put the Baramond Roman suitcase into your System folder.

Also available is Paramond, a brand-new, exclusive (and free!) version of the Garamond face, designed by Jon Wheal and based on Claude Garamond’s sixteenth-century type. Includes extended ligature set (ft, fft, ct, st and fj). Available in Roman style only. View a preview and then download the zipped TrueType Font (.ttf) file here. Please note that, to accommodate the extra ligatures, the character access codes for Baramond and Paramond are not compatible, and you will need to use the Windows Character Map or your word processor’s Insert Symbol function to access the special characters.
