Traditional Dance, Bali - The word “Sang Hyang” means “deity” and the performers of the sacred Sang Hyang Dances are said to be possessed by specific deities who enable them to perform supernatural feats. Sang Hyang dances are usually performed to help ward off danger of pestilence and getting rid of black magic. Trance is induced through incense, smoke and chanting of female villagers who praises the gods and ask them to descend, while another male chorus imitate the sound of gamelan. The most renown Sang Hyang dances are: Sang Hyang Dedari (Heavenly Nymphs), Sang Hyang Jaran (Horse) and Sang Hyang Deling.
