Join Darrell Rivers and her friends in North Tower as they work their way up the school from being young first years to serious, staid sixth years. As the Headmistress, Miss Grayling points out to the girls on their arrival to the school, they will get a lot out of Malory Towers. Darrell knows that she has six years in which to conquer her hot temper! Will she be able to control it by the time she gets to the Sixth Form?

The girls soon pair up with each other. Darrell's best friend is the calm and collected Sally Hope - an unlikely match, considering their first term antics.
Irene, a genius at Maths and Music, pairs up with Belinda, a talented artist. Both girls are scatterbrained and disorganised and have a distinctly bad effect on each other, but are hugely popular with the other girls.
Quick-witted Alicia is the only girl whose best friend, Betty, is from another tower. Together the two cause hilarity as they play countless tricks on the unsuspecting French Mistress, Mam'zelle Dupont. But Miss Potts, the North Tower house Mistress is not amused!
Gwendoline Mary, a spoilt only child is the only girl who has no real friend at school-she tries to make friend with the new girls, but they soon see her for what she is, and move on. Her big debut, however come in the Fifth Form, when she really surpasses herself. Her best friends are Daphne and Mavis.

New girls join every year providing more excitement as they reveal secrets and talents. A new arrival in the third form causes horse-havoc and finds a friend in the manly Miss Peters. Twins Ruth and Connie arrive in the Upper fourth and give Darrell some Real Hard Work as Head Girl. of the Form.

Classroom tricks and midnight feasts are the perfect ingredients for this School Series.

The other girls call them "The Stuck-Up Twins", and laugh at them, but they soon settle down and become friends with everyone. The girls in Pat and Isabel's form each have special characteristics and talents. There is Alison, the twins' dizzy cousin, who is constantly worrying about how she looks, the responsible Hilary Wentworth, who is frequently head of the form. Carlotta is a wild Spanish girl who used to ride in a circus ring, and often loses control of herself. She does not care one bit that one or two of the girls look down on her because of her background.

Doris is a clumsy girl, hopeless at ordinary lessons, but a talented mimic and actress. She wins the respect of Pam Boardman, a clever girl whose academic work is way ahead of her age. The two become friends and help each other as best they can.

In the Seond Form, Gladys and Mirabel arrive at St. Clare's as two complete opposites. Mirabel is a loud spoilt girl goes around telling everyone she will not stay beyond half-term. Gladys is a sad mousy character with a secret she can't tell anyone. The two become firm friends when Gladys confides in Mirabel and then convinces her to stay on at St. Clare's.

Anne-Marie arrives in the Fifth form and declares she is a poet, but is angry that everybody seems more impressed with musical genius Felicity Ray, who plays an imaginary violin as she sleepwalks. With characters such as madcap Bobby (Roberta), and her trickster friend Janet, the beautiful but selfish Angela, and Mam'zelle's unscrupulous niece Claudine, every book in the St. Clare's series becomes more exciting than the last.

She befriends Joan whose parents never write to her, and soon settles down at school, helping her friend John with the school garden.

In the second book she also shows a talent for music, and plays a duet with Richard in the end-of-term concert.

Mystery Series (Five Find-Outers and Dog)

  • Mystery of the Burnt Cottage
  • Fatty Frederick Algernon Trotville, or Fatty as he is better known, is the leader of the Five Find-Outers. As an only child, he frequently receives huge tips from wealthy relatives, and always has money when he needs it, to the frustration of the others. Fatty loves disguising himself - both to assist in the solving of mysteries, and to play tricks on the others. He is very clever, and usually works out the mysteries before the others, but he is distinctly lacking in modesty.

Lawrence Daykin, known as Larry is the eldest at 13, and was the original leader of the Five Find-Outers, but passed the role willingly to Fatty after the second mystery. Larry is smart, but is often scornful towards the younger members of the group

Margaret Daykin (Daisy) is Larry's younger sister. She is twelve years old, and the practical one in the club. It was her idea to form the club in the first place.

Philip Hilton (Pip) is the same age as Daisy. He seems to be less in control than the others, and is always struggling to have something important to do. His parents are strict, and wish he would put as much effort into his schoolwork as he does into the mysteries

Elizabeth Hilton, (Bets) is Pip's young sister, and the youngest in the group. She is in awe of Fatty, and he is fond of her. She frequently comes across a vital clue in the mysteries, and is the first one to recognise Fatty in his disguises.

Buster is Fatty's little Scottish Terrier, who is fiercely protective of his master. He loves chasing rabbits and snapping at the ankles of Mr. Goon.

Theopholus Goon, the local bobby, is not fond of the Five Find-Outers, as they seem to be cleverer than him. He detests Buster and always seems to get the wrong suspect in the end.

Inspector (then Cheif Inspector, then Superintendent)Jenks is a friend of the children. He is based on a real character from Enid Blyton's home town.

    The Secret Seven

  • Secret Seven
  • Peter The Secret Seven has all the right ideas for a Secret Society - a membership badge, clubhouse (the shed at the bottom of Peter and Janet's garden) and password. They shadow suspects, look for clues, and find themselves in all sorts of compromising situations, but despite the interference of an unwelcome sibling, they always get their man in the end!

Peter is the head of the Secret Seven - and he takes his position very seriously! He does not look kindly upon Club Members losing their badges and forgetting their passwords. Peter's sister Janet is also a members of the Secret Seven, and makes much more of a contribution than the other girl members. Peter and Janet founded the club, and they own Scamper the dog, and unofficial extra member of the club - although he does step in when George is temporarily banned from being part of the Secret Seven in "Go Ahead Secret Seven!".

Peter goes to school with Colin, George and Jack. Jack has a treasured collection of Famous Five books! Jack's annoying sister Susie is the club's worst enemy - she is always sneaking about, trying to guess their password and frequently giving them false clues. Sometimes, however, this has the opposite effect, and actually helps the Seven!

Colin is one who frequently stumbles across suspicious situations, and leads the club into solving them.

Pam and Barbara are best friends - both love ballet and giggle lots. Peter often gets impatient with them, but they do occasionally do their bit for the club.
