The Australian Music Theatre Website was recently archived by the PANDORA project (a joint venture by the National Library of Australia and the State Library of Victoria) due to its 'National Significance'

Why this site?

Musical Theatre is the highest grossing form of live entertainment in Australia (ABS / Aus. Council report) and yet the material, and often the key creators are usually international.

To build a sustainable industry for our writers,  performers and creators there is a need for increased Education, Enterprises, and ultimately Employment opportunities - the three building blocks of the Magnormos Live Entertainment Network.

This site, preparing for re-launch at www.australianmusicals.com in 2003, offers philanthropic support in advancing awareness of Australian musicals, whilst providing advertising and promotional opportunities nationwide . It is the intention of Magnormos to increase this awareness with Enterprises; including readings, concerts and small/full scale productions of original Australian musicals.

OZMADE MUSICALS

Amidst the flag raisings, the speeches, the parades and the parties, a little bit of history was made on Sunday January 26th when Magnormos unveiled it’s highly anticipated OZMADE MUSICALS showcase.

The landmark day kicked off with a promotional traffic stopper at Federation Square where featured artists from OZMADE MUSICALS performed a snippet of the impressive material on offer. The vibe was unmistakable, with curious Melburnians soon converging in the heart of the city’s latest hotspot to put a face to the music.

With a lasting impression left on the city's newest cultural landmark, the OZMADE MUSICALS team headed towards the funky Theatreworks in St. Kilda for a 3pm and 8pm performance spotlighting home-grown musical theatre composing and performing talents.

Magnormos Artistic Director Aaron Joyner and internationally acclaimed talent Kevin Purcell led over 25 established and emerging music theatre stars through a pioneering two-hour program. Featuring material based purely on submissions to the Australian Music Theatre web site, OZMADE MUSICALS covered a broad scope of local musicals, from writers all around the country.

Old favourites found new life mixed with the new blood from current hot Australian Music Theatre writers with program selections from Jon English & David Mackay, Matthew Frank & Dean Bryant, John & Fiona Thorne, Kevin Purcell & Stephen Paix & Victor Kazan, Ian Dorricot & Jo Denver, Reg Livermore & Patrick Flynn, Aaron Joyner, Tim Passmore, Paul Kavanagh & Ross Fiddes, Jo Denver & Donald Woodward, Susie Davies-Splitter & Phil Splitter, Peter Stannard & Peter Benjamin and Phil Moore.

While the aura in the theatre was one of support and excitement, the buzz in the foyer post-show was electrifying, as performers met writers, writers met licensing agents, and arts critics and journalists gave feedback and advice.

Magnormos will proudly continue it's OZMADE MUSICALS tradition, with plans to launch the event nation-wide underway...

  What they've said:

"...an ambitious, well-organised, sincere and often surprising presentation of new Australian songs. .... an eye-opening look at what Australian writers are concerned with, very little of which was cliched. .... New works were given an airing, aspiring singers a guernsey, and the commitment shown by everyone involved was exemplary. ...

"If Australian musical theatre doesn't have a resurgence, it won't be for lack of trying by Joyner and Clark."

- Fiona Scott Norman, The Age.

"...a most impressive line-up of local performers. Aaron Joyner’s artistic and professional direction was again evident in his choice of cast, varied selection of music, and effective use of the theatre space. ...a very elegant and entertaining concert, and after ozMade Musicals, I’m well on the way to becoming one of Magormos’ most devoted fans."

"I’m looking forward to making this my Australia Day tradition!"

- Kim Edwards, Vibewire.net.

".. a landmark production"

- Frank Van Straten, ABC
