Competed as part of team "Awesome Foursome", which was 1st in the teams race with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the mens race and 1st in the women's race. Thanks to the local vineyards for the bottles of wine and to Adidas and Shoe Clinic for the vouchers.

28:58, so my second-fastest time ever and second time under 29 minutes. First over the first 1km, but then pulled in by Michael Walton as my shins seized up. Felt like I was going to do a slow time, so very happy with the end result.

Trip: Holdsworth road end

28 February 2009
I was sitting under a tarpaulin eating my breakfast at 6:15am when the rain started. I thought it must just be a shower, but instead it set in and was quite heavy by the time I had packed everything up and was ready to go. Figured that the side creeks could become a problem if there was too much heavy rain, so I modified my intended route and ended up doing the Hooper Loop with some extras.
Up to Atiwhakatu Hut in 1h15 (DOC time 3hrs). Took some photos, enjoyed the opportunity to get out of the wet, and pondered my next move. Decided to head back down to the Hooper Loop turn off, and climbed up that track to the Gentle Annie. Got very wet and a bit cold as I gained height. At the top decided I needed to put on a dry top, so went along to the Mountain House shelter to do that. And from there back to the top of the climb and back down the Gentle Annie to complete the Hooper Loop.
Total day was 19.5km in 3h30 of walk time.

Trip: Field Hut and Table Top
|
|
14 February 2009
Up from Otaki Forks to Field Hut and Table Top. 1200m climb over 8.65km (x 2 for return), so a fairly steep one. DOC time was 3-4 hrs to Field Hut; 2 hrs back down. I took 1h41 to the hut, had a photo stop, then went on for 30 mins to reach the Penn Creek turnoff at the far end of Table Top. Total time 4h10 including 17 mins of stops.

First 5k race since before Christmas. My time of 30:11 was around a minute slower than my PB. However, pleased gven the recency of the Hutt River Trail ultra.

17 January 2009
A hard day. A very strong wind over the Incline, and then probably far too fast on the downhill to the Incline carpark. Knew I was in trouble by 26k - glutes in particular were very sore. At 7:30:42 I ended up just a smidgin faster than last year, although I should have been much faster given my fitness level.
