The Absence of Tears
"The Absence of Tears" ®

A lonely young man confronts angels, his unique identity, and the truths of adulthood

TREMAIN, KENTUCKY - Where do tears rest after the death of a loved one? They may turn to a resting place of acceptance or dwell deep in ominous sadness. Gavin Kingston, a 17-year-old who can see and talk with angels, finds himself in both places simultaneously. Ashton Knight tells how this teenager learns to make the best of his situation, while never fully accepting or understanding in The Absence of Tears: Book One and Book Two (now available through 1stbooks Library).
Gavin is a happy, gifted boy before his father’s death. At seven, he discovers within himself a limited form of telepathy. At eleven, he sees his first angel, and begins receiving preparatory training for the future awaiting him. At thirteen, Gavin’s father dies in a car wreck and his mother turns to alcohol to relieve the pain. Gavin finds himself dealing with his own pain at the loss as well as he and his mother’s all-too-quickly deteriorating relationship.
Gavin eventually accepts the realities that sometimes bad things happen to good people and sometimes good people turn bad. The extraordinary qualities that mark him as “different” provide the means to endure the tragic changes in his life...although he can not bring himself to fully embrace the strength within him, for fear of setting into motion God’s plan for his life, which would come with such a price as to make all he has yet endured seem trivial.
Knight essentially folds concepts of history, theology, and science together, making use of the places where one blurs into another, smoothing the places where contradictions appear between the three (an approach he admits would not be feasible in the study of any of the three singularly). The result is a novel that, although filled with extraordinary individuals and ideas, can only be called a work of fantasy at the expense of overlooking the true-to-life feel one experiences while relating with the characters. A suspenseful novel with the power to keep you turning pages late into the night, while at the same time dreading that place beyond the last page, where the words run out and the story comes to an end. Ultimately, The Absence of Tears is versatile in that it could fit into any and all of the preferred genres of the times; though predominately suspense, fantasy, or drama-although not necessarily in that order.
Ashton Knight was born in Kentucky in 1978. His interests include history, pseudo-science, theology, and behavioral psychology. He currently resides in a house on Lake Barkley, where he is working on his next novel.
