My Grandfather, Alvin Wade, has presented us with a mystery that we all hope to solve someday. But until then here are the facts that we know, some are family stories, some are proven facts.
- Born 13 December 1842 Tuscarawas County, OH
- Alvin told older children, Father's name was James. Mothers never given.
- Lived/worked the Ohio & Erie Canal on the section between Chillicothe and Portsmouth, OH before 1860.
- Enlisted in Civil War at Jasper, Ohio(Pike County) in 1860
- Two versions of why he enlisted. 1st one: Mother sent him to the store after a loaf of bread. He was talked into enlisting. Never returned home.
2nd(which is probably true). He had an argument with father due to his forgetting the water buckets for the mules pulling the barge on the Ohio&Erie Canal, his father booted him off the barge to go back for the buckets. He enlisted in the Army instead and left home that day.
- Returned Home in 1862 due to injuries received.
- Went back to Duty in Civil War, 1862
- Mustered out Civil War, 1865, Arkansas Certificate states he was 20 years of age.
- Returned Home to find family had disappeared completely
- Came to Ross County, OH 1865 with a friend.
- Married twice, first to Margaret J. Nebergall(4 children), 2nd to Hannah Chestnut(6 children)
- Lived in Ross county, OH, until his death, 1911
