| The Birth of the the Telephone (a short History) One of the first telephone milestones in history was March 10, 1876. It was on this day in Boston, Massachusetts USA, that Alexander Graham Bell invented the first "working" telephone. His assistant Thomas Watson fashioned the device itself which was a simple thing made of a wooden stand, a funnel, a cup of acid, and some copper wire. These simple parts made the first working telephone. Bakelite was the first plastic and also the material of choice for early telephone construction. If you look to the left you can see one of the early candlestick telephones, these phones had seperate bells. Later Bakelite telephones such as the 332 (in the UK) were developed with internal bells.
