Our adult Olympic distance triathlon will start just outside of the beautiful sandy beach at the Mauch Chunk Lake Park. I hope you will agree, the waters at Mauch Chunk to be on of the cleanest lakes you'll swim in all year, our volunteers and professional staff among the friendliest you will encounter, and our post race party will end your day right! We have a great race weekend planned for 2009! Saturday, July 18th we will hold the packet pickup for the Anthracite Triathlon, and we will also host the 2nd annual Youth Splash and Dash. The youth race consists of a 100 or 200 yard swim inside the swim zone, and up to a mile run through the camp site and park at Mauch Chunk Lake Park. The Anthracite Youth Splash and Dash is the 2nd race in the NEPA Youth Multi Sport Race Series. All proceeds from the Anthracite race will benefit the Hazleton YMCA/YWCA Barracuda swim team, and will help us to achieve the Y's mission: To empower men, women, and children to realize their fullest potential through programs and services that develop the mind, body, and spirit.
Congratulations to all the athletes that competed in the 2008 Anthracite Triathlon! Temperatures that day reached into the 90's, and you endured a very challenging course. Your efforts and your success are inspirational! Thank you again to all of our fantastic volunteers. We had so many different groups, and individuals helping out on race day. Our race concluded with zero accidents or injuries. We all owe the volunteers and professional police and fire departments a dept of thanks for keeping our athletes safe and pointed in the right direction. Our first annual youth splash & dash was also a huge success. Over 40 youth participated, swimming either a 100 or 200 yard swim, and running .25, .5, or a one mile course. Its exciting to see these young athletes compete for the first time in a multi sport event. I believe these events build confidence and self esteem for our youth. Racing and training teaches our youth healthy lifestyles, that they will carry with them forever. Thanks again for your support of our Y's races, and for helping us to further achieve the mission of the YMCA & YWCA.
