Ann Arbor Area Home Scholars (AAAHS) is an all-inclusive support group for home schoolers. We warmly welcome members of diverse backgrounds and beliefs.
AAAHS was established in September, 2005 and has grown to a community of over 30 families. It is a volunteer organization and is run by the entire AAAHS community, with leadership by the Moderator and the Advisory Committee.
Ann Arbor Area Home Scholars provides an opportunity to reinforce your own home schooling efforts while encouraging other home school families. In addition to encouraging our children to learn and love learning, we strive to teach our children respect and kindness to others, and the principles of a civil society. To establish common expectations in such a diverse group, we have developed guidelines for AAAHS events. Families attending regularly in 2007/2008 included children aged 5 through high school, with younger siblings always being welcome. Member families come from many communities in Washtenaw, Wayne, Livingston and Oakland counties. While many are from Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, others come as far away as from Livonia, Northville, Chelsea, Toledo and Flint.
We meet on Wednesday afternoons. From September through May we gather from 1:00 to 4:00 at a wonderful indoor location in Ann Arbor, with a gym, art and crafts space, classrooms, board games, and air hockey, billiard and ping pong tables. We also offer a host of great activities including field trips, curriculum sharing days, holiday parties, and classes. In the past, our classes have included sports, free Open Gym time with professional supervision, drama and improv, chess, crafts, art, and more. In June and July we meet at a park for social time and sports classes; in August, we take a break.
