Our
calendar is supposed to give us a
simple way of counting the days and marking the seasons.
But over the centuries, a
combination of Roman Imperial Ego and poor planning have given us
a calendar with problems, including:
1. Months that are uneven - with
some having 30 days, others
31, and one 28 or 29. Thank the Roman emperors for this garbled mess!
2. Financial quarters that are uneven, making bookeeping and accounting
is difficult
3. It is impossible to quickly determine the weekday of any particular
date in
a calendar
4. Our calendars are not "perpetual." We use over two
dozen different monthly calendars, not just one
Others note the problem of a
calendar that varies from year to year and propose a calendar that
remains identical each calendar year. This requires either "null" or
"off-calendar" days, or even a "leap week" consisting of several days
every few years. Both of these present their own problems, as
we shall see.
This Website will
explore possible calendar
changes in light of the following four criterea:
1. Do they effectively address
problems with the current Gregorian Calendar?
2. Do the proposed calendars have any problems of their own?
3. How easy would it be for a calendar proposal to be adopted?
4. (A slightly humorous critereon) Does it fix the "Calendar Rhyme" we're
forced to learn with the Gregorian Calendar? "30 days hath September,
April, June and November. All the rest have 31, except February, which
has 28, and in leap years 29."
The selection of proposed calendars on this site will likely
expand, but for now, let's look at five possible calendars that
could very well replace our own in the coming years. Click on the links
below to examine each calendar in more detail, and be sure to
check back to this page often for updates.
