Books We'd Like to Burn

Welcome to my book review page!
Book reviewing is a strange little world.
You know, of course, that the book reviews you read in newspapers and magazines are quite often not written out of a disinterested critical perspective.
Small papers with limited space for reviews often run only positive reviews of books
justifying this by saying that the purpose of their review page is to get people to read
so why waste space by running negative reviews?

In major national book reviews, there's a startling amount of backscratching going on.
This was revealed to me this summer when I had a conversation with a prominent writer
who'd just published a review of a new book by another awared-winning author.
The review was positive, but I'd just read the book myself and found it shallow, predictable
and paint-by-number in terms of both plot and character.
The author/reviewer nodded and said she essentially agreed with me, but
"I admire her writing in general, so I don't want to discourage people from reading her."
Well.
None of that here, friends.
As time goes on, this page will grow to include reviews of contemporary fiction
as well as classic works. I'll also be adding a children's page. So come back often!
