"This world is the prison of the believers and the paradise of the unbelievers."

Imam Al-Awza'ee (d.157H) said, "Whoever remembers death frequently then he will suffice with little, and whoever realises that his words are from his actions will speak only a little."

Al-Hasan Al-Basri (d.110H) said, "From the signs that one has drowned in his sins is his lack of delight in fasting during the day and praying through the night."

Mutee' Al-Balakhee asked Abu Haneefah (d.150H) about one who says he does not know whether his Lord is in the heavens or on the earth. Abu Haneefah replied, "He has disbelieved, because Allah has said, 'The Most Merciful rose above the Throne. [Quran 20:5]', and His Throne is above the seven Heavens."

Yahyaa al-Qattan (said), "I heard Sufyan (Al-Thawri, d.161H) say, 'The worst of things is to seek this world with actions of the Hereafter.'"

al-Fudayl ibn Iyyaad (d.187H) said: "Glad tidings for the one who died upon Islam and the Sunnah - and if that is the case then let one say much: MashaaAllah (As Allah wills)."

Abdullah ibn Mas'ood (d.32H) - radiallaahu anhu - said, "Beware of going to extremes and harshness. Beware of exaggeration and cling to the ancient Religion." [Sahih by Abdur-Razzaq and Ibn Nasr]

Uqbah ibn Alqamah said: I asked Al-Awza'ee (d.157H) about Iman (Faith). Can it increase? He said, "Yes, until it becomes like the mountains." I said: Can it decrease? He said, "Yes, even until nothing remains of it." [Al-Lalika'ee]

It was said to Sahl: What is the hardest thing for the soul (to achieve)? He said: Sincerity, when there is no other desire in it.

Ibn Mas'ood said, "Learn, learn! So when you have learnt then act."

Al-Qurtubee (d.671H) - rahimahullah - said: "The root of ibaadah is: humility and submissiveness. The various duties that have been prescribed by Allah upon the people are called ibaadaat (acts of worship), since what is required is that these acts of worship must be done with submissiveness and humility to Allah - the Most High." [Al-Jaami li-Ahkaamil-Qur'an]
