The Barrington River Canoe Trip is planned out for May the 4th and 5th. But before that time I have placed some information below about the surrounding areas. Feel free to look around at anything that interrests you.
Here is the story of me and my friends trying to complete the Barrington River:
Barrington River Trial
The following information is taken from Canoe Routes of Nova Scotia
Type: River and Lake
Rating: Advanced
Length: 32 km (2 days)
Portages: three or four short portages
Main bodies of water: Little Bay, Great Pubnico Lake, Barrington River and Barrington Lake.
Start: West shore of Little Bay in Yarmouth co.
Finish: Bridge on No. 3 Highway at Barrington Head in Shelburn co.
The first 9 km of this route are on Great Pubnico Lake. The lake is full of small islands and is very shallow. It can be a nightmare in a strong wind. After leaving Great Pubnico Lake there is a short section of rough water which may have to be portaged. The other short carries are 2 km before Barrington Lake and just after leaving it. Barrington Lake is 2.5 km and will not cause any problems. The take out point is at the bridge in Barrington. There are suitable campsites along the route. Most of the land is provincial crown land.
Information gathered by myself
A lot of men in Pubnico have canoed this route before and out of all the people i've spoken to most of them said that it would be no problem. But when the River is high it couldbe dangerous so I advise you to go when the water level is lower. Also they reported only taking only one day to complete the 32 km, opposed to the 2 days written in Canoe Routes Of Nova Scotia. I've biked to the staring of Barrington River and it seems to be a little ticky but if you take your time you should be alright.
If you really want to get farmiliarized with the River you are canoeing or the trail you are riding you should get a map of the area and study it. This could help a lot. I have a 6 foot map of the Barrington River, I got it from the local departement of Lands and Forrests in Tusket.
