Accion Juvenil Latina

History

During the Conference for Dominican Affairs held in February 2002, Latino leaders from Colleges all over New Jersey met for the first time.  Through a discussion led by Cid Wilson, the group addressed the issues affecting Latinos at all levels of education throughout New Jersey.  The delegates created an email list server to continue communication with the hopes of eventually meeting again to figure out solutions to the problems talked about.  The group waned for a few months until two members met again at the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey conference and decided to continue the hopes of AJL.  The culmination of months of hard work came together when AJL had its first official planning meeting on Saturday October 5, 2002.
The attendees of this meeting discussed the prior issues and developed the following three major points that will eventually be the mission statement:
  • Create and implement a state wide high school tutoring and mentoring program
  • Establish a state wide council of Latino Organizations on the collegiate level
  • Create and implement a community based parent education program

What we need from you

AJL is the first Latino statewide initiative on the collegiate level.  The way that we envision AJL functioning is through you the college student.  We shall work in conjunction with local community organizations and have the support of the Latino Leadership Alliance and the Dominican American National Roundtable in all our endeavors.  Though we will have their support, all the operations and decisions of AJL are completely dependent on the executive board and the delegates from each individual college.  What we ask of you is your attendance at our next AJL meeting at Montclair State University on ????  AJL has not been formally established.  There is still an immense amount of work to do. Your input, network of students, and schools’ support is what we ask for.  If you have further questions you can email Yanette Brito, Lachica2030@aol.com or Manuel Cabrera, manuelc@eden.rutgers.edu
