Logan Square has become a traffic circle but, at its heart, the Swann Memorial Fountain retains a bit of the Square's heritage as a public place. The fountain was named for Dr. Wilson Cary Swann, a 19th-century Philadelphia physician who championed the health value of accessible street-side drinking fountains of clean water for people and troughs for horses. The fountain's designers showed a playfulness by using swans as features of the fountain. Swann Fountain retains that playfulness, especially on a hot summertime day like today. The designers were Wilson Eyre, Jr. and Alexander Stirling Calder. Mr. Calder also designed elements of Washington Square Park in New York City and was the father of artist Alexander Calder.
