philadelphia today

green on a gray day

Tiny Fitler Square is one of the quietest public parks in Center City. At the heart of an increasingly appealing neighborhood, the Square may be found on Pine Street at 23rd and 24th Streets. On our gray and drizzly Sunday, this view is from the Square's central fountain. In the midground, on its pedestal, is one of the park's public sculptures: a ram. More fanciful, though, is the turtle family to be found next to one set of parkbenches. The green building in the background is one of the neighborhood's more popular restaurants. Opened in 1896, the Square retains a bit of its nineteenth-century character.
