Currently my Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop has Windows XP Professional and Solaris 8 Intel installed on 1 single hard drive.

Before installing Solaris, you will need a USB keyboard because the built-in keyboard on this laptop will not work and you need to install patch made for Dell laptops 112352-01. The built-in keyboard will not work during the installation.

The first time I installed the OS on my laptop I only spared 3 Gb for Solaris. You will notice that in the following pictures, you will see only 3Gb. I think 4 Gb for Solaris is generous if you will not be installing additional software packages. I started over again and now my current 20 Gb hard drive is partitioned as follows:

The procedures for preparing this laptop with a dual-boot operating system are exactly the same as outlined on this page. I will begin this outline at the step where you will choose the remaining partition on your hard drive to install Solaris. This procedure will occur after you finish the "System Identification" step where you tell the installer if your computer will be networked, hostname , time zone , geographic region , the correct time/date , and software group.
